Winnie’s Top Albums of 2012
25 Sleigh Bells – Reign of Terror

Sometimes I have these weird dreams where Alexis Kraus is seducing me by playing “Comeback Kid” in a flannel onesie. I wake up hating my life.

24 Andy Stott – Luxury Problems

A beautiful body of cutting edge experimental music to make out to.

23 Mackelmore – The Heist

Make the Money - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Mainstream hip-hop at it’s finest. I should also note that Macklemore gives me a female boner, sorry mum. And for all you haters out there, watch this.

Some tripped out stuff from South of the border in Seattle where they are having the second coming of grunge but hip hop this time. Check out Blue Sky Black Death & Nacho Picasso who released 3? albums in 2012.
Blue Sky Black Death and Nacho Picasso – Bloody Murder

21 Scuba – Personality

Scuba’s DJ set at FIVESIXTY in August was one of my faves of 12′. He’s on the rise after departing from his previous dubstep sound to hard hitting techno with a dash of trance.

20. Carly Rae Jepsen – Kiss

There are several reasons why former Mission, BC resident Carly Rae Jepsen made our list this year. Firstly, according to my iTunes library I’ve listened to “This Kiss” a total of 62 times, with “Wrong Feels So Right” coming in at a solid 42. Secondly, ya’ll know you listened to “Call Me Maybe” at least once this summer while simultaneously enjoying the fuck out of yourself. And lastly, my roommate went to high school with her and apparently she killed it as Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz”.
Carly Rae Jepsen – Wrong Feels So Right

19 Riff Raff – Birth of An Icon

The highly controversial and fascinating, Riff Raff put together a solid free album after being signed to Mad Decent. He’s got his share of haters which means he must be doing something right??

This record makes me want to purchase a pair of leopard print jeggings and twerk the night away.
S
16. White Lung – Sorry

Vancouver’s White Lung. It’s funny because the album is called Sorry and it’s 20minutes long but it’s 20 minutes of the best getting beat up for your lunch money you ever felt.
T
15. Schoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions

Schoolboy Q feat. Ab Soul – Druggys Wit Hoes Again
Bucket hat connoisseur and rap mastermind ScHoolboy Q has a flow reminiscent of yung HOVA. He also has a song entitled “Sexting”, which is cool.
S
14. Twin Shadow – Confess

On his sophomore effort, Twin Shadow uses an 80′s sensibility to document his life and relationships in the present tense. It’s an album filled with danceable beats and human emotion, or in other words, the perfect record for a suburban house party.
T
13 The XX – Coexist

I felt a little underwhelmed by this album at first but it’s subtly grew on me. Chill vibes.

Tame Impala – Feels Like We Only Go Backwards
I get serious Sgt. Peppers vibes from this album and I am totally ok with that.
T
11 A Tribe Called Red – A Tribe Called Red

A Tribe Called Red – MoombahWow
Ottawa’s A Tribe Called Red mix the pow-wow vibes with the Trap Moombah thing to create one of the most unique combinations of sound in the “EDM” world. Oh, and Diplo fux wit it.
T
10 Japandroids – Celebration Rock

Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built
Making Vancouver proud since 2009.

9 How To Dress Well -Total Loss

How to Dress Well – & It Was U
When I go through intense periods of hating the opposite sex, I listen to How to Dress Well and write poetry about shitty bro’s.

Consisting of 11-tracks, “Shrines” unique concoction of electronic-dance music makes you sad that the world is going end with Y2K.

4. Kendrick Lamar- Good Kid M.A.A.D City

Kendrick Lamar – The Art of Peer Pressure
Compton-native Kendrick Lamar returns rap to a gloried art form with “good kid, m.A.A.d city”. As his major label debut, ”GKMC” explores Lamar’s childhood through poetic rhyming, strategically placed skits, and collaborations with some of the industries biggest names, including Drake and Dr. Dre as executive producer. This is one of those albums that will only get better with time, kind of like “The Chronic”.
S
3. Frank Ocean – Channel Orange

Frank Ocean – Thinkin Bout You
Nominated for six Grammy’s, Frankie’s studio debut is a beautiful representation of lust, life and heartbreak. And if you’re human, it will quickly remind you that love knows no limits, orientation, race, or gender.

1. Lana Del Rey – Born To Die (The Paradise Edition)

Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness
Oh Lana, how dare they say such mean things about you and try to tell you that you are not #indie, manufactured and judge you based on one Saturday Night Live performance. They do not know you like I do. We know it’s not true. They just want to dismiss your genius so they can feel better about their terrible lives. We won’t let them do that to you. You are #1.

New White Lung

How cool would it be to play in a band with three of the hottest punk rock chicks around? Ask Kenny from White Lung (srsly though, ask him). Your favourite Vancouver grunge band has a new album coming out on the 29th of May and you best be listening; get on my level.
White Lung have more or less mastered the essence of their genre. Their new album “Sorry” is like re-living your first show in your early teens… you better have hoped you brought two pairs of underwear. Can’t relate? Talk to me after you’ve blasted through the album next week.
Catch White Lung at their CD Release this Thursday night @ The Biltmore and check out their tour dates here and catch them in a city near you.

the interview show: Nü Sensae

One rainy day, I spoke with Nü Sensae core Daniel and Andrea outside the Biltmore in their tour van while BFF band White Lung was doing soundcheck. Sometimes, you can hear WL frontwoman Mish screeching in the background–dang, that lady is loud!
It has been a big year for these young punks, Nü Sensae. On top of touring nonstop, these to have been signed to Suicide Squeeze Records and Daniel’s BF Seth Bogard (from Hunx and His Punx) told Vancouver in print that one night he vomited on Daniel’s cock. It doesn’t get any more punk rock than that.
Since the interview, Nü Sensae have recruited a third member of the band, guitarist Brody McKnight (from Mutators/Sex Negatives). I read about Daniel saying that they had done as much as they could with two instruments. They are working on a new three instrument release now.
the interview show with Nü Sensae
Nü Sensae “New Lies” (The first track from TV, Death and the Devil)
Nü Sensae “Total Drift” (Listen for Andrea’s scream on this track. Recording this album was getting frenzied and one late night, Andrea cracked and they taped it!)

Sleddie Tis’ Been Funz

Winnie is back from the Sled Island Festival. Almost caught up on missed sleep. Big thanks to the Sled Island People for putting on such a great show. To echo the sentiments of many Calgarians, the city is really lucky to have such a great festival! so keep up the good work.
Shouts to Glenn at Beatroute Magazine for having us come and play and thank you to my Auntie Kathy for housing my smelly azz.
Till Next Year.
