Winnie’s Top Albums of 2012

25 Sleigh Bells – Reign of Terror

Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror

Comeback Kid – Sleigh Bells

Sometimes I have these weird dreams where Alexis Kraus is seducing me by playing “Comeback Kid” in a flannel onesie. I wake up hating my life.

S

24 Andy Stott – Luxury Problems

Andy Stott – Numb

A beautiful body of cutting edge experimental music to make out to.

T

23 Mackelmore – The Heist

The Heist

Make the Money - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Mainstream hip-hop at it’s finest. I should also note that Macklemore gives me a female boner, sorry mum. And for all you haters out there, watch this.

22. Blue Sky Black Death & Nacho Picasso - Exalted &  The Lord Of The Flies

Some tripped out stuff from South of the border in Seattle where they are having the second coming of grunge but hip hop this time. Check out Blue Sky Black Death & Nacho Picasso who released 3? albums in 2012.

Blue Sky Black Death and Nacho Picasso – Bloody Murder

T
21 Scuba – Personality

Scuba’s DJ set at FIVESIXTY in August was one of my faves of 12′. He’s on the rise after departing from his previous dubstep sound to hard hitting techno with a dash of trance.

Scuba – Dsy Chn

T
20. Carly Rae Jepsen – Kiss

Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss

There are several reasons why former Mission, BC resident Carly Rae Jepsen made our list this year. Firstly, according to my iTunes library I’ve listened to “This Kiss” a total of 62 times, with “Wrong Feels So Right” coming in at a solid 42. Secondly, ya’ll know you listened to “Call Me Maybe” at least once this summer while simultaneously enjoying the fuck out of yourself. And lastly, my roommate went to high school with her and apparently she killed it as Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz”.

Carly Rae Jepsen – Wrong Feels So Right

S

19 Riff Raff – Birth of An Icon

Riff Raff- Birth of an Icon

Riff Raff – Lil’ Mama

The highly controversial and fascinating, Riff Raff put together a solid free album after being signed to Mad Decent. He’s got his share of haters which means he must be doing something right??

T

18. Peace – The World Is Too Much With Us

Vancouver’s Peace giving young girls everywhere dem feelins.

Peace – Your Hand in Mine

T
17. Santigold – Master of My Make Believe

Master of My Make Believe

Santigold – Disparate Youth

This record makes me want to purchase a pair of leopard print jeggings and twerk the night away.

S

16. White Lung – Sorry

White Lung – Glue

Vancouver’s White Lung. It’s funny because the album is called Sorry and it’s 20minutes long but it’s 20 minutes of the best getting beat up for your lunch money you ever felt.

T
15. Schoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions

Habits & Contradictions

Schoolboy Q feat. Ab Soul – Druggys Wit Hoes Again

Bucket hat connoisseur and rap mastermind ScHoolboy Q has a flow reminiscent of yung HOVA. He also has a song entitled “Sexting”, which is cool.

S

14. Twin Shadow – Confess

Habits & Contradictions

Twin Shadow – Five Seconds

On his sophomore effort, Twin Shadow uses an 80′s sensibility to document his life and relationships in the present tense. It’s an album filled with danceable beats and human emotion, or in other words, the perfect record for a suburban house party.

T

13 The XX – Coexist

The XX – Sunset

I felt a little underwhelmed by this album at first but it’s subtly grew on me. Chill vibes.

T

12 Tame Impala – Lonerism

Tame Impala – Feels Like We Only Go Backwards

I get serious Sgt. Peppers vibes from this album and I am totally ok with that.

T

11 A Tribe Called Red – A Tribe Called Red

A Tribe Called Red – MoombahWow

Ottawa’s A Tribe Called Red mix the pow-wow vibes with the Trap Moombah thing to create one of the most unique combinations of sound in the “EDM” world. Oh, and Diplo fux wit it.

T

10 Japandroids – Celebration Rock

Celebration Rock

Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built

Making Vancouver proud since 2009.

S

9 How To Dress Well -Total Loss

How to Dress Well – & It Was U

When I go through intense periods of hating the opposite sex, I listen to How to Dress Well and write poetry about shitty bro’s.

S

8 Purity Ring – Shrines

Purity Ring - Shrines

Purity Ring – Ungirthed

Consisting of 11-tracks, “Shrines” unique concoction of electronic-dance music makes you sad that the world is going end with Y2K.

S

7 Flume – Flume

Flume – Sleepless (feat. Jezzabell Doran)

Debut album from this young Australian producer has all the right influences across the electronic music spectrum creating something modern and unique. Expect big things.

T
6 Miguel – Kaleidoscope Dream

Miguel

Miguel – The Thrill

I have a feeling this dude is gunna have a sex tape in the near future, Ray J style. KD is tite though.

S

5 Alt–J – An Awesome Wave

Alt-J – Something Good

Loves this album. Mercury prize winner. The musical equivalent to a field full of pretty smelling flowers.

T

4. Kendrick Lamar- Good Kid M.A.A.D City

Good Kid Mad City

Kendrick Lamar – The Art of Peer Pressure

Compton-native Kendrick Lamar returns rap to a gloried art form with “good kid, m.A.A.d city”. As his major label debut, ”GKMC” explores Lamar’s childhood through poetic rhyming, strategically placed skits, and collaborations with some of the industries biggest names, including Drake and Dr. Dre as executive producer. This is one of those albums that will only get better with time, kind of like “The Chronic”.

S

3. Frank Ocean – Channel Orange

Channel Orange

Frank Ocean – Thinkin Bout You

Nominated for six Grammy’s, Frankie’s studio debut is a beautiful representation of lust, life and heartbreak. And if you’re human, it will quickly remind you that love knows no limits, orientation, race, or gender.

S

2. Grimes – Visions

Oblivion – Grimes

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb.

T
1. Lana Del Rey – Born To Die (The Paradise Edition)

Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness

Oh Lana, how dare they say such mean things about you and try to tell you that you are not #indie, manufactured and judge you based on one Saturday Night Live performance. They do not know you like I do. We know it’s not true. They just want to dismiss your genius so they can feel better about their terrible lives. We won’t let them do that to you. You are #1.

MS MR – Candy Bar Creep Show EP

MS MR - Candy Bar Creep Show

It would seem that New York duo MS MR are currently the Amanda Bynes of the indie music world. They first came onto my radar in early May, when their gothic pop-ballad Hurricane started trending on Tumblr. It quickly reached “Best New Track” status on Pitchfork and was remixed by Twin Shadow soon after.

In terms of background, not much is known about the mysterious MS MR but that actually works to their advantage. The duo’s dark lyrics compiled with the beauty of the lead singers voice sends you into a hyper reality. You become entranced by the words and quickly lose interest in who is actually singing them.

Fortunately for me, MS MR released their Candy Bar Creep Show EP on September 14th and it might just be the best thing I’ve heard all year. It’s just twisted enough to make you feel sane while still incorporating enough catchy beats to warm your soul. Go download it now, because it probably won’t be cool next month.

Review: Twin Shadow Packs Out Venue

George Lewis Jr. (AKA Twin Shadow) is some kinda hipster kid who can wail… and play a mean guit-fiddle. Backed by a band of equally (Brooklyn style) royalty class scenesters, the group has been killing it for a while now. They played a few tracks off their new record, though their single, “Five Seconds“, was the real crowd favorite.

Twin Shadow are doing well for themselves (note their fly pulp-fiction video) but the band still has some live chops to work out. They didn’t push any boundaries from a live perspective, and I didn’t walk out with any memorable moments. When I show up for a live performance, I expect to be awed by something, in some way … and the band didn’t deliver.

The opening band was a monotone, nu wave, shoe-gaze act. The only reason I know their name, Pool Side, is because I overheard someone saying it walking out. They had a weak “outroduction” … sorry, that was bad.

If you haven’t heard Twin Shadow yet, check out, “Five Seconds”, from their album “Confess”

Twin Shadow – Run My Heart (Yours Truly Session)

Here’s a sick new session from our friends over at Yours Truly.  It features George Lewis Jr. from Twin Shadow doing an intimate performance of “Run My Heart” from “Confess”. And I love me a man in some leopard so you know I’m down.

Patient – Twin Shadow (Video)

George Lewis Jr. looking quite dapper, the badass kind. He is decked out in leather and leopard print shaving his face with a switchblade. This is the second Biker video Five Seconds was the first. Twin Shadow dropped “Confess” July 10th, 2012.
