21 Scuba – Personality

Scuba’s DJ set at FIVESIXTY in August was one of my faves of 12′. He’s on the rise after departing from his previous dubstep sound to hard hitting techno with a dash of trance.

20. Carly Rae Jepsen – Kiss

There are several reasons why former Mission, BC resident Carly Rae Jepsen made our list this year. Firstly, according to my iTunes library I’ve listened to “This Kiss” a total of 62 times, with “Wrong Feels So Right” coming in at a solid 42. Secondly, ya’ll know you listened to “Call Me Maybe” at least once this summer while simultaneously enjoying the fuck out of yourself. And lastly, my roommate went to high school with her and apparently she killed it as Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz”.

On his sophomore effort, Twin Shadow uses an 80′s sensibility to document his life and relationships in the present tense. It’s an album filled with danceable beats and human emotion, or in other words, the perfect record for a suburban house party.

Kendrick Lamar – The Art of Peer Pressure
Compton-native Kendrick Lamar returns rap to a gloried art form with “good kid, m.A.A.d city”. As his major label debut, ”GKMC” explores Lamar’s childhood through poetic rhyming, strategically placed skits, and collaborations with some of the industries biggest names, including Drake and Dr. Dre as executive producer. 1. Lana Del Rey – Born To Die (The Paradise Edition)

Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness
Oh Lana, how dare they say such mean things about you and try to tell you that you are not #indie, manufactured and judge you based on one Saturday Night Live performance. They do not know you like I do. We know it’s not true. They just want to dismiss your genius so they can feel better about their terrible lives. We won’t let them do that to you. You are #1.

MS MR – Candy Bar Creep Show EP

It would seem that New York duo MS MR are currently the Amanda Bynes of the indie music world. They first came onto my radar in early May, when their gothic pop-ballad Hurricane started trending on Tumblr. It quickly reached “Best New Track” status on Pitchfork and was remixed by Twin Shadow soon after.
In terms of background, not much is known about the mysterious MS MR but that actually works to their advantage. The duo’s dark lyrics compiled with the beauty of the lead singers voice sends you into a hyper reality. You become entranced by the words and quickly lose interest in who is actually singing them.
Fortunately for me, MS MR released their Candy Bar Creep Show EP on September 14th and it might just be the best thing I’ve heard all year. It’s just twisted enough to make you feel sane while still incorporating enough catchy beats to warm your soul. Go download it now, because it probably won’t be cool next month.

Review: Twin Shadow Packs Out Venue
George Lewis Jr. (AKA Twin Shadow) is some kinda hipster kid who can wail… and play a mean guit-fiddle. Backed by a band of equally (Brooklyn style) royalty class scenesters, the group has been killing it for a while now. They played a few tracks off their new record, though their single, “Five Seconds“, was the real crowd favorite.
Twin Shadow are doing well for themselves (note their fly pulp-fiction video) but the band still has some live chops to work out. They didn’t push any boundaries from a live perspective, and I didn’t walk out with any memorable moments. When I show up for a live performance, I expect to be awed by something, in some way … and the band didn’t deliver.
The opening band was a monotone, nu wave, shoe-gaze act. The only reason I know their name, Pool Side, is because I overheard someone saying it walking out. They had a weak “outroduction” … sorry, that was bad.
If you haven’t heard Twin Shadow yet, check out, “Five Seconds”, from their album “Confess”

“Five Seconds” is the first single off of Twin Shadow’s new album titled “Confess” which will be out on July 9th on 4AD. Frontman George Lewis Jr. continues down a similar path as his previous work, with the slick New Wave grooves still pulsing on this new single.
