WInnie’s Going to Cali

Winnie Goes to L.A.

Okay, we all love Vancouver, there’s no denying that.  But sometimes the weather can really rain on our parade, literally. And I don’t know about you, but Winnie is craving some glorious sunshine.  That’s why “we’re going going back back to cali cali.”  Well, L.A. to be more precise.

Obviously we’re not going alone. We’ve called some of the hottest up and coming acts in the industry and their combined talents are sure to blow your musical mind. It’s all going down Friday, March 9 at Dim Mak Studios in Hollywood and here’s who we’re bringing with us:

PAUL DEVRO

Paul Devro
Before he left L.A. to work as Diplo’s right hand man running the Mad Decent Label, Paul invented the modern dance party in Vancouver.  Now he shares the stage with Boyz Noize, Justice, Fake Blood, and A-trak, just to name a few.

Paul Devro – Everywhere

Benzona
Benzona, also with Mad Decent, is a former Winnie Cooper contributor who is quickly making a name for himself with his fun Colombian-infused disco house sets. Download one of his dope ass mixes here.

Humans
Humans
This Vancouver based duo have a strong local following that’s grown rapidly since making appearances at Pop Montreal, CMJ, SXSW, and NXNE.  They’ve even shared the stage with such Canadian favorites as Broken Social Scene, Chromeo, and Junior Boys.  And after blowing up the City of Angels for the first time, these boys will be heading to Austin for Winnie’s showcase at SXSW.

Humans – De Ciel

Chill Black Guys

CBG (Chill Black Guys)
Chill Black Guys (CBG), who hail from the L.A./Bay area, are a hip-hop group on the verge of signing a major record deal.  You may also know them from their popular music video’s, which feature friend and recent breakout star Kreayshawn.

Chill Black Guys – Heavy Metal

Tribe of Zebra's
Tribe of Zebras
A new producer/DJ duo that have been making ground djing parties at various Hollywood hot spots over the past few years.  They’ve remixed everyone from Gotye to the Morning Benders and still find time to produce their own music.

Gotye Feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know (Tribe Of Zebras Remix)

Glover Junior
Producer and DJ for the CBG who loves playing music for drunk people.

Tickets are $10 in advance, which you can purchase here, and $15 at the door.  For more information visit our event page.

Just Announced: “Tribe of Zebras” (L.A)

Winnie Cooper is partnering for the first time with the mysterious and anonymous ladies of Tales from a Bar Stool, to bring you L.A’s Tribe of Zebras.

Comprised of Amika Akaya and Austin Wedvick, these L.A producers/Dj’s have a coveted spot  at Teddy’s and the Hollywood W Hotel, where they regularly spin for the celebrity gong show of young Hollywood. The Tribe plays original music and their own remixes of songs from Local Natives to Radiohead.

The Tribe of Zebras are getting blog love as “an awesome deviation from the norm” and described as “a two man army bent on world motivation…they’ll do it by partying your ass off.”

Tribe of Zebras – Walking on a Dream Remix

Tribe of Zebras – Stranger

Tribe of Zebras – Foster the People Remix “Pumped Up Kicks”

The Tales website announces  ”you never know who’s going to appear in the crowd at a Tribe of Zebras show.” Which is pretty exciting, because I’m really hoping for Kevin Costner, preferably in his Waterworld wardrobe, but I think I may be alone in that.

“Tales from a Bar Stool” are self described as “Sassy true stories told by SA & WT, two champagne drinking, high heel wearing, free spirited single girls from the perch of a bar stool.”

I usually scoff and make “ya right” faces at Cosmo and other “lady mags” in the supermarket line-up, then ninja grab one and hide it under my groceries. But I can vouch that these ladies, although occupying a “cosmo-esque” genre, are talented writers and their “tales” are enthralling, and not in the “I really need to know what 101 things I need to do in bed with a sandwich and a black light to make my man happy” kind of way.

Also, dudes, take note, the “Tales from a Barstool” advice is not only female-centric, they write about their social interactions and deliver a verdict on what lessons they learned from the experience. Usually when I go to restaurants I have my head down and remain focused on my spin dip, but these ladies get table-crashed by the New Kids on the Block and learn life lessons while doing it.

Tales from a Bar Stool are encouraging their readers and Tribe of Zebra’s fans to come out to the Vancouver show and “create your own tale”…..Which I am taking as a personal challenge as the Electric owl is the perfect venue for non-spinich dip related evenings. The Owl’s brand new expansive modern space has brick walls, polished concrete floors, intimate booths, a huge dancefloor, two bars and a full kitchen serving “japanese style snacks prepared by a Vietnamese chef in an izakaya-inspired room.”
