March 9 – OFFICIAL SXSW Showcase Fundraiser

For the second year in a row, Winnie Cooper is heading to SXSW to show Austin, Texas just how much talent Vancouver has to offer. We’re going even bigger in 2013 and teaming up with BeatRoute, Glory Days, and Light Organ Records to throw a showcase that includes music from Fine Times, Hey Ocean, the Boom Booms, Gold & Youth, Hannah Georges, and the Zolas.
If you wanna support our efforts, come by the Biltmore Cabaret on March 9 for our official SXSW Fundraiser. It’s a Saturday, so all the normal Glory Days shenanigans will be in full effect, including jams from M!G!H, Rico Uno, and Genie. Let’s all get Winnie wasted for a good cause! Estaban’s Picks – November 2012

Kate Boy – Northern Lights
Has the lack of swedish pop tunes from The Knife left a hole in your heart in the last year? Don’t fret so hard, along with Purity Ring, we now have the startling initial release of Kate Boy pumping out some sideways, synth driven magic.
Autre Nu Veut – Counting

Arthur Ashin is the man behind Autre Ne Veut, or as the drunk people who ask me what song I’m playing call it, “Outro new what?” His artist alias is almost as peculiar as his music but his aggressive new take on R&B is outstanding. Combining slow-jam beats with outrageous vocal effects into a pleasing soundscape. Fun fact, Arthur was roommates with Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) in college. Makes sense right?
Teleman – Cristina

Upon my discovery of this track, I immediately went to dig up some information on this guy. At first I found George Phillip Telemann, and realized I was off by about 300 years but I may have discorvered the origin of the name? This Teleman is a pop trio from London, England. I’m excited to see where they go from here. Cristina demonstrates brave and beautiful simplicity in the best of ways.
Local Pick: The Zolas – Knot in my Heart

It’s not surprising to see The Zolas jump in the ring with the big kids. The prog-pop duo’s track record with striking a resonating chord in Vancouver’s music scene is somewhat flawless, so it only makes sense that their next release would feel similar, but on a higher plain. Knot in my Heart contains the recipe of what made the band originally great, a precise and memorable song with lyrics that make you think singer Zach Gray’s been reading your blog and writing about you. Except this time around, there’s something a little more rough and raw about their sound. A different texture, like a rough gem or an old house with a lot of character. There’s a story here too compelling not to listen to.
You can hear the new song in this very fitting, and lovely stop-motion music video.
The Zolas will be playing Winnie’s East Van Christmas Party on December 19th.

19/12 – An East Van Christmas at Fortune Sound Club

There’s officially one month left in 2012. Thus, you have 31 more days to do terrible things before you make those dreaded New Year resolutions to be a better person. This also might be your last month on earth, so you have no excuses to not party.
On December 19, Fortune Sound Club will be throwing an epic end of the world party with some of the best local talent Vancouver has to offer. An East Van Christmas will feature The Zola’s, No Sinner, Cyril Hahn, Young Braised, Gang Signs, Fine Times, Tough Lovers, Bankrobber, and Gold & Youth. And if this event couldn’t get any sweeter, it will also double as a charity event for the St. James Music Academy, a music program for underprivileged youth in the Downtown East Side. The night will be hosted by the Ryan and Amy Show, with tunes coming from DJ Jonny Grayston (East Van Soul Club) between sets.
Advanced tickets are only $15 and can be purchased online or at Red Cat, Zulu, Dipt, Beatstreet, and Highlife records. If I’m doing the math correctly, that’s less than $2.00 per act. Let’s give 2012 a proper send off! Happy Holidays bb’s.

Dion & The Belmonts – Teenager In Love
Here’s some kissing tips!!!
the interview show: Said The Whale

We’re back–and better than ever!
I decided to start 2010 with one of my favourite Vancouver bands right now, Said The Whale. This is also one of the funniest interviews I have done.
I reached Tyler Bankcroft (wearing the blue t-shirt in the middle of the sofa) on his fuzzy cellphone from the bowels of Said The Whale‘s Gastown rehearsal space. He did his best to remain diplomatic when I asked him what it would be like to kiss Grant Lawrence from CBC Radio 3.
And just listen for when I let The Zolas crash the interview and really give Tyler a hard time. Don’t worry. He gives as good as he gets.
Said The Whale on the interview show
Said The Whale “Emerald Lake, AB”
This track won Radio 3′s Bucky Award for the Most Canadian song.
Said The Whale “Gentleman”
Tyler swears this song was not written to get a girlfriend, but vows to test it out soon since they have not yet played it live.

Sweetheart(s) Die Hard

Saturday Feb 13th @ Funkys w/ Techomancer & The Zolas with the Winnie Cooper djs playing oldies, sock hop and classic pop.
the interview show: The Zolas

Zack and Tom are The Zolas, one of Vancouver’s newest upstart bands. Their new debut record is called Tic Toc Tic.
The Zolas make piano-driven pop. Some have compared them to currently-crazy 90s superstars like Ben Folds and Fiona Apple. (Damn! Remember them?)
Yes, they all use pianos, but, other than that, I don’t really agree with the comparison–but it is a nice place to start a conversation.
I chatted with Zack and Tom as they wandered around the mean city streets of Toronto. And I still have no idea what the band’s name is about.
The Zolas on the interview show
The Zolas “You’re So Cool” (This track namechecks the Biltmore! One of the best tracks on the album.)
Ben Folds “Bitches Ain’t Shit” (NOTE: This song is a slow starter. Further proof that I am just as crazy as Ben and Fiona, here is Ben Folds covering Dr. DRE. Enjoy.)
The Zolas will be at The Vogue, December 18th. See you there.
