Santigold – Big Mouth

A few years ago I wrote a paper in which I discussed and subsequently dissected the current state of women in hip-hop. I eventually came to the conclusion that my fellow gender counteparts were about to take back what was rightfully theirs. The reasoning behind this you ask? Well that’s easy, her name is Santigold.
Santigold (formerly Santogold) released her debut album in 2008 and that shit was all kinds of cray. It blended everything from reggae to indie pop and featured some of the industries biggest names, including Diplo and Switch. She co-wrote and produced the entire album and once again made female empowerment an endearing quality.

As of late, Santigold has been working on her follow up album “Master of My Make-Believe”, which is expected for a spring release. The first single “Big Mouth” dropped last month and with it she reclaims the meaning behind bad ass bitch. It’s reminiscent of old-school Missy Elliot and the subtle stabs at her misguided haters is pure genius. This is one fantasy I definitely want to be apart of.

For some reason collaborations are a rare thing in the DJ game. Sure DJs might duel during gigs, but, when producing, they either work in a dedicated partnership (think MSTRKRFT or the Crystal Method), but, most of the time, DJs go at it alone.

Be on the lookout for Diplo & Switch’s latest collaboration, Major Lazer. The Duo were responsible for M.I.A.’s latest offering, “Kala” and Santogold’s self titled long player.
Any one familiar with the Diplo & Santogold mixtape, “Top Rated” might of noticed that Wesley (Diplo) is on quite the Reggae tip lately, the album will follow that trend being a Reggae & Dance Hall album.
They have a myspace for the side project with a couple of snipets up. They recently debuted the album at the Notting Hill Carnival in the UK this last weekend.
Check out this interview Wesley did for Urb magazine where he sheds light on a lot of recent trends, and mentions that next up he’s producing an “indie rock” album for a group of “real young kids” recently signed to “XL”……
