Artist collective HICU return with their second edition to their Sound Tape consisting of 7 tracks from several up and coming Canadian rappers. The project features locals Teshalé, Seth Kay, Dave Fields, Spotty Josif & Sharuk plus Toronto’s GRNDBLVD, MEZ MARIYÉ and Alberta’s Ayoo Angie. It was a great year hosting local talent at Fortune Sound Club for Winnie Cooper & Friends, we’re starting the new year off right by taking our middle floor showcase to the main room. Winnie Cooper has been supporting all sorts of Vancouver talent for quite some time and with this event we’re giving local artists the opportunity to showcase their work in an open-minded space with absolutely no ties to one type of style/image or genre… we accept it all. This time around we’ve got locals Seth Kay, Spotty Josif, Dave Fields plus JSPH, HRVY, Jordo2000, Flores & Yurie on the 1’s and 2’s. Within the past 2-3 years Vancouver has emerged a lot of talented artists ranging from all sides of the musical spectrum but this year we’ve noticed a growth in sound and community. This list is simply Vancouver artists we believe you should keep an eye on in the new year with a handful of new generation artists plus ones that are re-branding themselves, check it out below!
Formerly from Vancouver now based in New York dance duo Bob Moses consisting of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance got quite the attention from their debut album Days Gone By, their blues infused house sound will continue to impress without a doubt.
Rapper/producer Matt Brevner has been at it for quite some time now even branching out to directing music videos for the likes of French Montana among others. He’s been quietly working on his next project and we can expect big things on it, expect it sometime early 2016.
Originally from Barrie, Ontario Dave Fields has made drastic progression this year producing his own sound, delivering solid deep lyrical content plus collaboration with Vancity’s nicest JayKin on the way. With his debut album coming out in January we couldn’t be anymore excited for this guy.
Trio band DiRTY RADIO have grown past their great covers and this year have put out their own original work that did not disappoint along with some out standing collaborations. They’re currently on tour with Dragonette & Young Empires, we see these guys spreading their sound farther than Canada next year.
Formerly a band member of Said The Whale, Ekali has been one of the fastest growing producers from Vancouver this year having been sampled on Drake’s mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late along with some solid remixes for the likes of What So Not, Denzel Curry, Gallant among several others. We can’t wait to hear what he has in store for the new year.
With only having released three songs so far Harrison Brome has become quite the buzz on the internet, this 19 year old not only has crafted quite the sound but his visuals have backed up every single so far. We’re sure to hear a project release in 2016.
I M U R
Duo I M U R consisting of Jenny Lea & Mikey J Blige released their debut EP Slow Dive which was a lyrically raw electronic R&B ride that has us coming back for more. They’ll be releasing a single a month with their debut full length album out in spring 2016.
A long time Winnie favorite James Deen spread his joyful electronic sound this year participating in the Red Bull Bass Camp in Montreal and releasing the On Vacation EP, I Appreciate U plus several cute remixes. (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ
KAI SKY WALKER
Rapper Kai Sky Walker deleted all of his previous projects and videos this year and released a brand new vibe with “Tylenol” which was the first single from the upcoming album HollywoodNORTH, we’re sure the wait is going to be worth it.
DJ/producer Kempeh has stepped up his production through out the year along with opening for several big acts such as What So Not, Snakehips, Loudpvck among others. His SUMHER EP was a great concept project and latest remixes showcase a promising sound that we’re sure will grow in the new year.
Pop duo Mu consisting of Francesca Belcourt & Brittney Rand got quite the attention with their self titled debut EP, with their latest single “Debauchery” premiering on FADER they’ve got the right eyes on them. Look out for MU II out February 12th.
Producer Nick Wisdom put out a lot of great music this year including Potatohead People’s Big Luxury and production credits on Illa J’s latest album not to mention his own dance jams. We can only imagine what he has in store for the new year.
HW&W Recording artist Pomo released some of the best remixes this year ranging from Sam Smith, Tinashe, AlunaGeorge, Mark Ronson among others. If that wasn’t enough his style has landed on upcoming singer Anderson Paak’s debut album out in the new year, without a doubt it’ll be a promising year for Pomo.
With one of the most unique sounds out of this city Rook Milo has had our attention since his debut EP MMVIII, having released two tracks from his upcoming EP Airhead it sounds very promising.
Local rapper formerly in duo District 36 released his debut solo project See U In LA which has to be one of the finest rap projects to have come out of Vancouver last year. Not only does Seth produce his own music but delivers vulnerability tastefully, we’re sure a new project is on the way.
It was a big year for producer Sleepy Tom who’s constantly growing his fan base with solid collaborations, the pillow cast and even opening for Madonna. Even though he encourages naps… don’t sleep on him this new year.
Sam Lucia & Natura aka So Loki have grown quickly this year capturing a unique sound that is demonstrated well with the two singles they’ve released, their debut album SUPERMANIC is set to be released early new year.
Spotty Josif from duo Spot & Ess released his debut solo project Found Footage 87 which found him not only singing but ranging his sound from Rap, R&B to Pop. It’s easily one of the most diverse local rap projects to have come out this year.
From raw recordings on soundcloud to being the most recent signee to Atlanta’s Awful Records, Tommy Genesis has had a great year releasing her debut album Word Vision which received support from the likes of Noisey, Complex among others. With the album being a trilogy you can expect 2 and 3 in the new year.
