the interview show: Double Rainbow

Hey folks, this week we are seeing double rainbow. And things look good.

This week, I have two cool acts for you to check out.

the interview show with Logan Lynn & Koortwah

First up, we have Logan Lynn. Logan has been around the block. He has already made it on the LOGO network and had the requisite rockstar drug-induced implosion. But all this stuff makes for great songs, right?

Logan Lynn is proud that he has figured out the secret to get people to pay for music once again! Give all the proceeds to charity. All the money from his current record I Killed Tomorrow Yesterday will go to the Q Foundation (the LGBT center where he works).  Why not head over to his website and support?

Logan Lynn “As Quickly As We Pass” A dope classic pop synth track. My fav on the record.

Logan Lynn “Velocity”

I came across Jake Courtois aka  Koortwah while he was driving in a truck in Vancouver struggling to make his demos. Since then, this Montreal-born boy has spent some time in New York and now makes Portland his home. The drawing is of Jake by comic book legend J. Bone, who came to a show with one of Jake’s porn star friends. How cool is that?

Koortwah “Candy in the Sun” (demo)

Koortwah “Night Vision” (demo) He doesn’t like to explain his lyrics, but I get him to for this one!

the interview show: Doomtree

I will call this one the sniffles interview. When I stumbled into the Biltmore, I was no where near 100%, and I was worried about not having a Kleenex to contain my snot drip, but this was the first time the entire 7 member Doomtree crew was touring together. It was my chance to get more than one member together, talking about what they do. I found Dessa asleep in a booth in the club, sick herself. After I woke her up, she found Lazerbeak and we sniffled and snorted through this interview.

For those who don’t know, Doomtree are a unique entity in hip hop, a collective of memebers who collaboruate and support each other thru their artistic endevours.

Even though everyone is sick, Dessa and Lazerbeak do not disappoint. Dessa talks about getting asked to join Doomtree and Lazerbeak reveals his dreams about meeting Jay-Z.

the interview show with Dessa and Lazerbeak from Doomtree

Doomtree (ft. Dessa and P.O.S.) “Dots and Dashes”

Dessa “The Chaconne” One of the most interesting indie MCs out there right now.

Dessa “Into The Spin”

Lazerbeak “Bound” He is one of Doometree’s producers and makes his own tracks.

Dessa, Lazerbeak and fellow Doomtree member SIMS will be at the Biltmore this Wednesday. See you there!

the interview show: raincity doubleshot

Every once and a while it is nice to discover the hidden gems in your own town. This week, I’ve found two, Blood Diamonds and Matty C.

No one seems to know anything about blog sensation Blood Diamonds. So I called him up to get to the bottom of things. There is some weird dude screaming “Mass Effect” in the background. As revenge, I asked Blood Diamonds what he is singing in the shower lately. He wanted to sound all indie cool by claiming he sings Cut Copy‘s latest, but that isn’t what he ended up singing.

Matty C is a local DJ veteran and has just put out a single “Action.” When I called Matty C, he was playing with his baby daughter on the couch. You can hear her cooing in the background as we chat. Sweet shoegaze disco tracks and babies. This show never disappoints!

Matty C & Blood Diamonds on the interview show

Matty C “Action” (Kutcorners remix)

David Bowie “Rebel Rebel” (Matty C edit)

Blood Diamonds (ft. Wet Look) “Lasting Love”

Apache Beat “Another Day” (Blood Diamonds remix)

the interview show: Doubleshot!

This week, things get crazy. Two bands, Blitz and Cory Lamb.

Blitz is a Canadian Rapper who represents the South East Asian community. In order to find an audience for his work, he had to travel to the UK, where he went from selling CDs on the street to getting signed to a label. Now he is back in Canada and working with Canadian hip hop legends of his youth, like Choclair and Solitair, so that he can help them gain new audiences all over the world. Oh yeah and did I mention when I called him, he said he was surfing the internet for porn?

Cory Lamb is a Christian rocker who sounds like he should be on American Idol. For some reason, when I asked, he didn’t want to talk about his underwear.

the interview show with Blitz(krieg) and Cory Lamb

Blitzkrieg “Way I Shine”

Cory Lamb “Break the Cycle” (Catch Cory Lamb in Winnipeg 4/15 and Yorkton 4/16.)

Next week, we have another doubleshot for you: local Vancouver DJ legend Matty C and the mysterious internet sensation Blood Diamonds.

the interview show: Summer Tour Special

Hello folks!

Ever had a band stay with you? Every been in a band and had trouble finding a place to stay after the show?

Last summer, I did a freelance piece for CBC Radio 3 on this topic. It aired today on Lanarama on CBC Radio 3.

Scott Wood and Couch Surfing

They usually put up these projects on their blog, so I can link to it, but they didn’t this time. Sadz. I will put up my rough edit so you can hear the funny stories from Carpenter, Ember Swift and Styrofoam Ones.

I also talked to some other cool bands about the same thing for the interview show in a sort of x-over! the interview show Summer Tour Special has great tales from Fallan Soldier,  Times Neue Roman, Humans and White Cowbell Oklahoma. Enjoy!

the interview show Summer Tour Special

Humans “Bike Home”

Times Neue Roman “Music and Math”

Fallan Soldier “Fights”

White Cowbell Oklahoma “Happy Ending”

Ember Swift “Disarming”

Carpenter “Don’t Go”

Styrofoam Ones “Pavement”

Times Neue Roman don’t sleep. They are back with a new vid. Look close for a cameo by TO’s April Aliermo from the band Hooded Fang.

New Club Shiz

Got this in the email the other day.

TB1 is an MC from Montreal. He has started releasing original material that one of his boys describes as “a fun sound that makes it impossible not to party to.”

A remix of the hit “Barbra Streisand” is what got things rolling for TB1 (below), along with his newest release 14ME14U (One for Me, One for You) (above).

Duck Sauce (A-Trak & Armand Van Helden) “Barbara Streisand” (T&A remix)

the interview show: Boats!

Boats (from Winnipeg) are one of my favorite bands right now. I am not so sure why they are not getting more indie love in Canada and the US!

My interview with Mat from the band was doomed from the get-go. Dodgy cell phone reception kept hijacking our conversation, but this did keep things interesting.

Stay tuned for the last part of the interview where Mat says the most controversial thing a music lover could say. (Music geeks, you have been warned!)

Boats on the interview show

Boats “Haircuts For Everybody!” (Doesn’t this track just scream good weather is coming?)

Boats “Movie Scores We Hummed”

Lucky Vancouver! Boats are winding their way back from SXSW (this is why they are “dead” in the picture above) and are at the Railway Club this Saturday. See you there!
