the interview show: P.O.S.

The mighty P.O.S. is an indie hip hop legend, mostly for pioneering a caustic sound which incorporates punk and hard rock influences in his beats. He is also the kingpin of the Minneapolis Doomtree Collective. Suffice it to say, I was psyched to meet the guy.

This interview was a real pressure cooker. We did the interview minutes before P.O.S. went on stage in his tour van while the line-up of people who couldn’t get into the show watched. Also, this interview was shot for a documentary that Doomtree were filming. And P.O.S. started the interview by telling me that this was his last record!

P.O.S. on the interview show

P.O.S. “Drumroll (We’re All Thirsty)” What he does best.

P.O.S. “Bleeding Hearts Club (MPLS Chapter)” P.O.S. with guest Slug (aka Atmosphere). P.O.S. is also considered part of Slug’s Rhymesayers crew.

the interview show: Jackyl

Jackyl tore up the scene just as hair metal died and grunge was ascending. Frontman Jesse James Dupree’s claim to fame is adding a chainsaw as an instrument to Jackyl’s set. (And, yes, Jesse has a guitar tech AND a chainsaw tech waiting backstage.)

Jackyl are back with a new record, they are not focusing on using the chainsaw in the new material, but they are still all about straight-up old-school party rock.

Jackyl on the interview show Listen as I unearth a dark secret from Jesse’s past!

Jackyl “Lumberjack” The introduction of the chainsaw.

Jackyl “My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine’s Ass” Have you ever been to a lame scenster party? I have always wanted to see Jesse James Dupree crash the party–chainsawing thru a wall–with this song.

the interview show vs the hood internet

The Hood Internet are two guys in Chicago STV SLV (left) and ABX (right), who take two distinct songs and mix them together. The results are sometimes funny and sometimes awesome.

The first time I met STV SLV (Steve Sleeve) in Vancouver, he had gotten lost somewhere between the restuarant and the venue. He was a little happy and would not stop gushing about the luxury of lax marijuana laws in our town.

He was a little more composed when we talked on the phone.

I love these guys because their tracks let us see what it would be like to see some unimaginable fan boy team ups. Damn: Caribou and Slug?!?!

The Hood Internet vs the interview show

The Hood Internet “It Was a Rainy Day” (Ice Cube vs CFCF)

The Hood Internet “Sun Chewed Up” (Slug & Murs vs Caribou)

Come see The Hood Internet Live at Fortune on July 29th. Offer the guys some. They might even take a request.

the interview show: Melleefresh

Melleefresh is Canada’s resident super vixen dance mogul. Most know her as the woman who discovered Niagra Falls DJ juggernaut Deadmau5.

Did you know that Tommy Lee is one of her biggest fans? And not only that, but Melleefresh has a little secret. She was also one of the voices behind a certain mega-memorable children’s cartoon show… (You didn’t think I was gonna just tell you, did you? You have to listen to find out.)

Melleefresh on the interview show
Melleefresh vs. Deadmau5 vs. Spydabrown vs. Cybersutra “Vanishing Trash” See what I mean? Super. Vixen.

The Hood Internet “Show Me Red Lights” (Robin S. x Holy Fuck) Next week, we have The Hood Internet. Listen to the interview and then let’s head to the show. Can’t wait to see how this stuff translates live!

the interview show: Plants and Animals

These guys look like they have been properly medicated. Their latest record La La Land definitely goes down smoothly. It was inspired by their constant touring of US, giving us songs lke “American Idol” and “Tom Cruz.” I chat with P&A’s Matthew Woodley about the night the spirit of Tom Cruise came to visit the band. What did he say?

Plants and Animals on the interview show

Plants and Animals “Kon Tiki” My favourite song on La La Land. It was inspired by a day of touring wineries and then trying to find a hotel at the beach. Hmmmm… This inspires me to make a similar trip. Who wants to join?

The Hood Internet (Amanda Blank vs Vega) “No Reason To Like You Better” This track is two of my favorite bands mashed together by one of Chicago’s up and coming producers. It should tide you over, the interview is coming up in a couple of weeks.

the interview show: Diamond Rings

“Cuz in the summer weather…/ We’ll put on sunscreen together…/ I would not want your skin to burn…”

YouTube Preview Image

“All Yr Songs” is my indie song of the summer.

Diamond Rings is the electro-acoustic project of John O and his crew. Check out all their vids–they are clever, well-crafted and endearingly goofy.

I tried to get John O to tell me who “All Yr Songs” is about. Heh: Listen to him dodge my questions. He also tells me what he would do to change the look of UK electro queen La Roux, if she fell into his makeup chair.

Diamond Rings on the interview show

Diamond Rings “All Yr Songs” (Green Go remix)

La Roux “In For The Kill” (Lifelike remix)

Aspirations “Get Fucked” (My other fav summer song.)

the interview show: Digits

What is Alt Altman aka Digits expecting in the mail?

Indie electronic acts were once a rare breed in our frosty north. First Junior Boys, then Caribou paved the way for indie dance, and Alt Altman assures me that Digits is only one of the many new faces ready to change the scene. Just please don’t ask him to talk in a fake British accent.

Like dance rogues LCD Soundsystem, Digits tackle strange topics in their songs. My fav “You’re Going to Age” is all about getting old.

Digits on the interview show

Digits “Sarah”

Digits “You’re Going to Age” (Schaatz remix) Cool remix of an already cool track.

LCD Soundsystem “You Wanted A Hit” (Soulwax remix) We both love how James Murphy manages to skewer himself and his scene in all his songs.

Caribou “Odessa” (Junior Boys remix) During the interview, Alt Altman imagines being in Dan Snaith’s band.

the interview show: Chris Jericho’s Fozzy

Not only is Winnipeg’s favorite son, Chris Jericho a WWE superstar, but he also has written a book, starred in film and tv–oh yeah, and he has his own band, F o z z y. He teamed up with industry stalwart Rich Ward, who was a founder of rap-metal pioneers Stuck Mojo. I asked Rich why he thinks the genre doesn’t get a lot of respect and he had some surprising things to say about metal-rap–and Winnipeg’s own Chris Jericho.

Chris Jericho’s Fozzy on the interview show

Fozzy “Martyr No More”

Was at the Fallan Soldier / Dragon Fli Empire show on Saturday and homegrown hip hop was flexing its biceps.

Fallan Soldier “Fights” Love this ringtone beat.

Also, friends Times Neue Roman are putting out their new EP Talking Sporty on July 6, 2010 with YYZ Records.

Times Neue Roman “Roq Roq” Show them some love. Buy it!

the interview show: Thunderheist

THE END OF AN ERA!

The rumours are true. Thunderheist is over. [Insert weeping emoticons here!!!!] Red Bull sales will plummet. Clubs will be just a little less sweaty.

But Isis and Grahmzilla don’t have any time for any funerals! Both have solo projects in the works.

Isis is working on tracks for her new project Surprise Sex and Grahmzilla is remixing hype artists like Vancouver sorceresses, Fan Death, calling himself Nautiluss.

I talk to them both about the death of one of party rap’s bright lights and life after Thunderheist.

Thunderheist on the interview show

Thunderheist “Jerk It” (bootleg mix) The song that started it all.

Thunderheist “Little Booty Girl” (Alias remix) 80s remix goodness.

Fan Death “Veronica’s Veil” (Nautiluss from the deep mix) Grahmzilla’s new project.
