the interview show: the stills

When I arrived at the Commodore to interview up and comer Gentleman Reg, I met Tim from The Stills and, out of the blue, he wanted to do an interview. I was all, “Uhm … Great! …How ’bout after soundcheck?!”

Wow. I had 45 minutes to prepare.

Note: Both Gentleman Reg and The Stills are on the Arts & Crafts label, the home of Canadian super indie acts, like Broken Social Scene and Feist.

A typical Montrealer, Tim (with the badge, above) did the interview taking a smoke break. Then Dave (on Tim’s left) from the band joined for a puff.

The Stills are at an interesting point in the band’s life. They just won a Juno for new band (*ahem* three albums into their career) as well as one for best alternative group. And they are one of those bands that have been dissed by indie tastemakers Pitchfork. Not sure why Pitchfork has decided to pick on The Stills… the guys have been making great atmospheric indie rock for three records.

I talk with them about all that and more.

The Stills on the interview show

The Stills “Being Here” My Favorite song on their current record.

The Stills “Snow In California” Listen to this one. Sounds like it is about climate change, but… no. It is about the canceled tv show Carnivale.

the interview show: Fallan Soldier

My inbox gets a lot of emails from bands who want interviews. Fallan Soldier is one request that immediately stuck out. Fallan Soldier is also the film and television actor Harris Allan. He most well known from his stint on Queer As Folk, playing street kid Hunter.

Like most of you, I was all, “The kid from Queer As Folk raps?! I gotta check this out.”

Fallan Soldier is not an actor’s vanity side project. Hip hop has always been a passion for Allan, like acting. Back in the day when his grandpa’s car got a flat tire, wee tot Harris started rapping about the whole situation.
Above The Call Of Duty is not anything like you’d expect, indie hip hop with mainstream aspirations. Music that could be a great opener for the Jonas Brothers or Kelly Clarson.
Harris is a local boy who fianced this whole thing himself  on his own label, so he would appreciate your support. The record is available at many independent record stores in Canada. A list of them can be found at his label’s website or his myspace.

Fallan Soldier on the interview show
Fallan Soldier “Fights”
The video for “Fight” launches on August 4th. Fallan Soldeir tells me, ‘It was “done on the price of lunch,”‘ but he is proud of the results.
Fallan Soldier ”60 In The Tank”
My favorite song on the album.

The Interview Show: The Artist Life

The Artist Life are a pop-punk band from the burbs surrounding Toronto, Ontario. You might recognize their lead, Ian Blackwood. [Ian is the guy in the "Explosion" t-shirt.] He was on a short-lived tween-oriented Nickelodeon TV series called Instant Star (but, hey, it was produced by the people behind Degrassi).
After releasing a their debut EP, Living, on their own, The Artist Life signed to Underground Operations, Canada’s label for everything punk-ish–and the same label as MuchMusic superstars Protest the Hero. Their Underground Operations EP, Let’s Start A Riot, is available for sale all over the place. You can still download their debut, Living, from the band’s site for free! [Click here.]
Ian literally walked right off the stage and did this interview over the phone, so if he seems a bit shellshocked, it’s cuz he was exhausted, drenched in sweat, thinking about stowing his gear and guzzling beer.
Right now the guys are trying to get their latest single “Sleep So Sound” to chart on MuchMusic. Help them out and request the song (as well as watch the video) here.

the interview show: times neue roman

It’s official. This interview made history on the interview show.
My chat with Times Neue Roman is my first 3way interview! I was in the studio. Arowbe, the lyrics guy from the group, was at his place in Toronto, while the rest of his crew were waiting to get out of a crowded parking lot after a Raptors game in Chicago.  Pretty effin’ cool.
For those who don’t know, Times Neue Roman are TO-based crew, new to the hip hop game. They use video game effects in their beats, leading some to call their stuff “high energy Nintendo rap.” While waiting to exit the parking lot, these guys were nice enough to talk to me about their beats and their take on the everlasting chasm between guys and girls.

and here are some tracks the TNR crew gave me so you can check them out…

the interview show: the hives

When The Hives entered the Commodore Ballroom, everyone in the room collectively turned their heads.
Keep in mind, this wasn’t at the show. The Hives were not bursting on stage. It wasn’t a room full of autograph-hungry fans. This was at three in the afternoon and the only people in the empty club were the barstaff, press and the stage crew.
Normally only the press would be excited to see the band show up. “Yah! We get to do the interview!” But every single person stopped and turned their heads. Each of them was carrying an armful of 5-10 signed hockey sticks.
The Hives had just returned from a skate with our Vancouver Canucks.
Strangely enough, none of them would talk about skating with the Sedin twins. Apparently, what happens in the rink, stays in the rink.

the interview show: Sinden

For some reason collaborations are a rare thing in the DJ game. Sure DJs might duel during gigs, but, when producing, they either work in a dedicated partnership (think MSTRKRFT or the Crystal Method), but, most of the time, DJs go at it alone.

Sinden is an exception to this rule. He is known more for his collaborations than solo work. He got his start working with Dave Taylor (aka Switch), where Switch played Yoda to the young Jedi Sinden.
Santogold “You’ll Find A Way” (Switch and Sinden remix)
But learning from the master Switch was not enough. Sinden also makes tracks with “The Count of Monte Cristal” aka “The Count” aka Herve.
The Count and Sinden (featuring Kid Sister) “Beeper” (A-Trak remix)
Slowly but surely, Sinden is starting to do more solo work.

the interview show: Saul Williams

Poet. Rapper. Educator. Actor. Spoken Word Artist. Saul Williams does it all.
Wikipedia says that most people will know Williams from his lead role in the 1998 film Slam. The film was about a talented young poet who is hampered by his ghetto roots. (Yup, one of those films.)
I know him through his music.
His first album Amathyst Rock Star was produced by hip hop legendary producer Rick Rubin, and in my interview with Saul, he explains why that relationship and album were complicated. His self-titled album is where it came together for me. Songs like “Talk to Strangers” (with Serj Tanikan on piano) and “List of Demands” are exactly what I want, well-produced, thought-provoking hip hop.
Funny. I call his stuff “hip hop,” but it could easily fit into many categories:  R&B, hip hop, alternative or indie rock, or even spoken word. Williams is one of those artists who ignores and transcends genre boundaries and does really interesting stuff.
And this is his problem.
No one knows how to market him. He was labeled “not enough of a rapper” by hip hop labels. At the same time, he is a African American artist with no problems working with “rock stars” like Trent Reznor or Serj from System of a Down–or covering bands like U2.
His latest album, The Inevitable Rise and Triumph of Niggy Tardust, was produced by industrial god Trent Reznor and still manages to hover somewhere in between hip hop and spoken word with Reznor’s industrial-inspired beats.
Rather than have another label misunderstand his music, Williams has decided to market the record himself . Yet again, Saul Williams is a pioneer.
The album is available for download for FREE (or $5 for a high quality rip). Buy it or just listen to it. You won’t be disappointed.

the interview show: The Virgins

The Virgins come straight out of the New York art scene and make sexy indie rock that is almost disco. They are not aloof pricks, as one might expect. They are just about the sweetest guys you could ever meet.

Donald (centre) and Wade (right) form the core of The Virgins, and they met at a Ryan McGinley photoshoot. For those of you who don’t know McGinley’s work, he is known for portraits of young hot naked people.
One of McGinley’s photos was used for the cover of the Sigur Ros 2008 album.
As the story goes, Donald and Wade went to Mexico where the photographer shot them (and their friends) cavorting on the beach. A dozen or so naked guys and girls cavorting on a beach for two weeks. Pretty cool origin story for a band.
Right now The Virgins have an “it” song “Rich Girls.” (But you may have heard most of their current album featured on the TV show, Gossip Girl.)
The best part of the interview is where Donald and Wade tell me how to seduce and then end things with a rich girl. The answer is not what you’d expect.

the interview show: Jon and Roy

Jon and Roy are technically a trio–yep, they got a new bass player. They got their start a the University of Victoria when Jon and Roy met in class.

Their music sounds laidback and chilled, just what you’d expect from two guys from the Island. And Jack Johnson comparisons are to be expected.

They may be from the island, but they don’t fall into any of the typical BC stereotypes. They are not snowboarders and they are not chronic. They do however listen to Snoop Dogg.

the interview show: circlesquare

CircleSquare is the music project fronted by former local boy Jeremy Shaw. Shaw has recently fled Vancouver’s insanely high cost of living for the artist-affordable haven of Berlin, like many other Canadian performers such as the mighty Peaches!

I did a piece for CBC Radio 3 (featuring Jeremy Shaw and Peaches) on Canadians who move. Listen to that here.

Shaw is also an accomplished visual/conceptual artist. Perhaps his most remembered piece is Jeremy Shaw: DMT, where he videotaped people on DMT and their ramblings. Great stuff.

My favourite CircleSquare track is “Fight Sounds Pt 1″ from his last EP. The song didn’t really get a push since his label, Output, went under before the EP even came out. Now CircleSquare are on Ghostly, the same label as Matthew Dear, and they have a new record, Songs About Dancing and Drugs, you can preview the new record here.

I recorded this interview twice. The first time, I got Jeremy to talk in depth about how he sees the link between drugs and music. That interview sadly was lost. Luckily, I got him to talk a little bit about it again.

CircleSquare on the interview show

It is so great to see a local guy get remixed by a world-class talent like Juan. I posted the radio edit here, but the full remix is the real shit.

CircleSquare “Hey You Guys” (The Juan Maclean remix Radio Edit)

And here is a special hour-long mix Jeremy has made for you. (Warning: this mix is slow to start, so give it time for the sound to come up.)
