SSLYBY are by far one of my favourite Polyvinyl artists. Resonating from Springfield Missouri, the group started when Philip Dickey and John Robert Cardwell met in 2002 during their freshman year of college. After releasing their own split EP in 2004, they signed to Polyvinyl Records some time later in June 2006.

You won’t want to miss these guys @ The Biltmore Monday, December 5th… we know Winnie won’t.

I went to visit my parents over the long weekend.

True to form, when I arrived, my dad was wearing a ‘Let It Be’ t-shirt and blaring the Sgt Peppers album on a 4-track reel to reel.

Pretty much from birth to age 10, I heard at least two Beatles songs per day and could recite most of the lyrics by the time I was 12.

I thank my dad now for basically raising me on the Beatles and we have both been really looking forward to the official release of the Beatles remastered catalog today (although it’s looking like I’ll have to battle it out to get my hands on a set).

The Libertines do an excellent job on this Beatles cover by not straying far from the original.

With summer coming to an end, it’s almost time to start listening to music that goes well with dark afternoons, bowls of soup, big warm sweaters, and giant furry blankets.

My autumn playlist is pretty much all Fleetwood Mac, but Gerry Rafferty can be thrown in there too.

Best known for the amazing ‘Baker Street’ song, Gerry Rafferty was also a member of Stealers Wheel.

Chicago is easily recognized as one of the most successful pop rock bands ever, having lasted for so many years while still charting single after single.

To achieve longevity in the music industry, Chicago’s sound evolved to keep pace with popular culture. With disco rising to dominate the airwaves in the 70s, the band released their thirteenth LP (cleverly titled ‘Chicago 13′) which was produced with disco clubs in mind.

Their track Street Player is such a departure from traditional rock and roll. There’s this long sort of tribal funk house break about halfway through (which is pretty standard for disco records of the era), but keep listening and check out the last couple minutes. It’s easily my favourite part!

Oh yeah, and it’s been heavily sampled as well… but I’ll leave that up to you to figure out. Too easy.

Classic rock used to be reserved for true aficionados, music enthusiasts, and adults (ie old people).

That’s different now.

Guitar. Hero.

Don’t get me wrong, I am ALL FOR people broadening their palates and learning about music they would have not enjoyed otherwise. Still, it floors me when I hear an 8 year old humming along to Heart.
