Lemonade Interview

This is the juiciest interview with Alex Pasternak (drummer) of Lemonade. Lemonade is currently on tour with Delorean, bringing dance and good vibes to cities all over the world. Before Lemonade’s sold-out show in Los Angeles we got to know Alex Pasternak, 1/3 of Lemonade’s electronic-reggae-toned music-making trio.

Why might people think they know Lemonade?

“Lemonade has played a club in your town at some point and you can still feel the positive vibes.”

(Download this Delorean remix of Lemonade’s ‘Big Weekend’)

What are you wearing right now?

“I’m wearing khakis and a collar shirt that makes me look 3D … like the old blue and red glasses trick mixed with Magic Eye.”

What is something that you would find completely romantic and unique to connect with someone on?

“A shared love of the Mediterranean, ethno-musicology, tapas/small plates and MDMA.”

What do you think the best hours of the day are for someone to listen to Lemonade?

“During sunset over the sea and sunrise, if you are still awake.”

What companies’ customer service situation frustrates you more then most?

“Whoa. This is deep. Probably any and every airlines’ CS department. I worked customer service at United Express in SF for THREE YEARS.”

(I went on to explain and bitch about how T-Mobile has been destroying my life this week and that is where this question arrived from.)

What is a hidden talent of one of your band members that is rarely revealed?

“I’m pretty sure Callan has ESP. And perhaps telekinesis as well.”

What is the average fan that you see at a Lemonade show like?

“Smiling, slightly bewildered, curious and full of bliss. Future.”

If you were a restaurant owner, what would you call your restaurant? Where would your restaurant be? And what would your restaurant be known for?

“I have been thinking about this for ten years. When I am too old to tour, I plan on opening a restaurant in San Francisco or Half Moon Bay, my home town. The food will be centered around basque Pintxos, which are like tapas but served on a  small round slice of a baguette. Just as traditional pintos from the basque country utilize local seafood, meats and produce, mine will consist of locally sourced ingredients from the Bay area. For example, Lingcod, Cabezon and smelt fish instead of Bacalau and sardines. Or Chanterelle mushrooms found in oak groves rather than hongos and setas from the northern Spanish forests. I may call my restaurant Ekhi, after my friend that taught me about basque food, music and culture.”

Who is someone that you think the internet should know more about, for instance who should we interview?

“My little sister Anna. She is four years younger than me and has lead a pretty crazy life in the last few years. Dancing in a samba troupe in Brazil, running a non-profit in Panama City, teaching surf lessons in northern Spain. Her recent jobs make me (a touring musician) feel like I barely travel. She would  be a great interview and she asks a lot of questions …”

What is something that is cute you have spotted recently on the internet?

“This isn’t cute as much as it is creepy. Enjoy.”

What are your favorite life sounds?

“I love the sound of the rise and fall of the shore break and the deep breaths of someone sleeping next to you. Also, the strange muffled swish when inside the barrel of a wave. And the sound of birds in the morning, advising me it’s time to go to bed.”

What are your top 3 albums of 2010?

El Guincho – Pop Negro Beach House – Teen Dream Delorean – Subiza

“Though I mostly listened to dance/electronic singles and EPs. These may be the only albums I have heard from 2010.”

Delorean – ‘Real Love’

What can we expect from Lemonade in 2011?

“Big things. We are writing our first proper full length, then we will be all over the place on tour. Expect good feelings and dreams, huge sound, collaboration and plenty of fun.”

::::::::::::::::  SO, YOU THINK YOU KNOW LEMONADE :::::::::::::::::::

Remember this gem? It’s from 1992.

Shinehead – Jamaican In New York

Ohhhh oh I’m an alien!

PS. the above Rough & Rugged album cover is from 1986… I dig the outfit.
