Jordan Rakei from Brisbane, Australia has released several exquisite Neo-soul tracks for over a year now and in August his second EP Groove Curse came out on Soul Has No Tempo which you can purchase here. What can we say about this cat besides the obvious that he’s incredibly talented and the soulful vibes he provides leaves you with a strong hope that this type of music is far from dead and it’s satisfying seeing someone still do it like this. His vocals float you across the whole EP with each track having it’s own strong soulful style with a touch of a reggae influence, if you like D’Angelo, Maxwell or anything like those artists you’ll love Jordan. The EP features vocals from Gwenn Bunn who is the vocalist and producer for Schoolboy Q’s “Collard Greens” featuring Kendrick Lamar if the music doesn’t reassure you’re liking towards this amazing artist. Jessy Lanza is a electronic music producer and performer from Hamilton, Ontario. Her debut record Pull My Hair Back was a top 10 finalist for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize.
Jessy and I chilled out in her van for a bit and ate candy. I asked her about her time as a piano teacher, her Hello Kitty obsession and working with Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys, but my favorite part of our chat is when Jessy goes off about when she gets called a “songstress.” Why? You’ll have to hear it.
