When I caught the Vancouver soundcheck of old friends and Toronto punk band PUP, the boys were trying to make a song from the new record, The Dream Is Over, work in their live set. At that point, PUP were three months into a world tour so I was shocked that by then every song on the record hadn’t been played over and over and over.
I hung out with Stefan from PUP as he waited for his sister to come pick him up for dinner. Which song from the new record The Dream Is Over do they still not play live? How can a tour can make you want to kill your best friends? How do the members of PUP break from punk band cliches? What is the song “DVP” about? Which PUP song is about a pet lizard? What would a love song from PUP sound like? Which song from the first record will the band never stop playing live and why? Which song was inspired by a girl calling Stefan a piece of shit? What “not loud” music are the guys in the band enjoying right now? What’s Stefan‘s favorite type of sushi? Which song does the band consider “just for them?” You’ll have to listen to find out.

Nashville rock band JEFF the Brotherhood started as brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall back in 2001 when the guys were in high school. Six records later, the band was signed to multinational record label Warners, but JTB were dropped just days before their second record for Warners (Wasted on the Dream) was due to be released.
I hung out with the Orrall brothers outside the Biltmore last time they were in town. You can hear the touring members of JEFF the Brotherhood and the band Bully partying in the background as we talk.
How do you make sure you get drunk enough to stay loose on stage, but not too drunk and sloppy? What does “The star was the beef” mean? How much did Diarrhea Planet get paid to play on Wasted on the Dream? Which song does rock veteran Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull play on? Is it true Jake gave up smoking pot? What is Kalimotxo and when do you drink it? Listen to our hilarious chat for all the answers.

Jennifer and Jessie Clavin are two sisters from sunny Southern California who make melodic rock and roll and sing about things they actually care about. Formerly of Los Angeles band Mika Miko, Jennifer and Jessie started Bleached after moving back to their hometown deep in the San Fernando Valley. They’ve since taken on a 70’s punk esthetic that paints a picture of vintage surf culture and rebellious riot girls. After the success of their first three singles, the girls are set to release “Ride Your Heart” on April 2 via Dead Oceans.
In support of their debut, Bleached will embark on a spring tour that stops in Vancouver at Fortune Sound Club on May 2. $12 advanced tickets are now available online or at Zulu, Red Cat, and Beatstreet Records.
For a chance to win two free tickets, email winnieguestlist(@)gmail.com with your name by April 19 at 5:00pm. Please use “Bleached Contest” in the subject line. You must be attending the Facebook event page to qualify.
