the interview show: Mother Mother

2011 was a big year for Vancouver’s Mother Mother, their third album Eureka gave the world my favorite Mother Mother track, “The Stand.” The band followed up Eureka with another solid release, The Sticks.
When it came time to chat about The Sticks, MM‘s frontman Ryan Guldemond (centre) chose to meet me at Cafe Deux Soleils, Commercial Drive’s legendary vegetarian eatery / coffee house / slam poetry space / live venue.
It turns out, Ryan has a history with Cafe Deux Soleils. Listen to our chat to find out all the details. One thing I love about Ryan is that he never minces words–which always makes for a lively conversation.

Mother Mother “The Stand” My absolute all-time favorite MM track. I get Ryan to take me thru writing this track. Awesome.
Mother Mother “Happy” A bittersweet introspective track and Ryan’s favorite on the record, The Sticks.
Mother Mother “Bit By Bit” My fav track from The Sticks.
You can catch Mother Mother on the summer festival circuit soon.

8/12 – Rykka Live at Fortune Sound Club

Upon @tristanorchard’s return from Rifflandia this past September, he raved about up-and-coming act Rykka, who performed at the annual festival held in Victoria, BC. However, at that particular moment in history, the only song that played on my iPod was Mario’s “Kryptonite“. Fast forward to the present tense, and you’ll find me throughly pissed off for sleeping on such an amazing local talent.
Rykka, real name Christina Maria, is a Vancouver-born singer-guitarist with a natural punk-rock aesthetic. Over the past few years, her sound has transformed from quirky-folk to edgy-yet-danceable-pop, a transition that is sure to be seen on her upcoming album. “Kodiak, which is slated for a 2013 release date, was recorded in Vancouver with Ryan Guldemond of Mother Mother, who Rykka will be performing with at the Commodore Ballroom before a lengthy European tour.

If you don’t want to wait that long before checking out this rising new act, Rykka is playing an early show tonight at Fortune Sound Club with Good For Grapes. Advanced tickets are $15 and you can purchase them here. Doors at 7:00pm.

the interview show: Mother Mother

It has been a great year for Mother Mother. Their song “The Stand” from their latest record Eureka has caught a lot of attention. And this band deserves more attention. They are a must listen for any fan of Metric.
When I reached Ryan from Mother Mother, he was doing the dishes at his father’s house on Quadra Island. Ryan was enjoying a bit of down time. I am glad he was relaxed because I could ask him questions like “What does wearing women’s underwear onstage do for his swagger?” Listen to the interview for his answer and more crazy questions!
(This show goes out to Coral, a devoted Mother Mother fan who insisted that I have them on the show.)

Mother Mother “The Stand” It’s great to see your hometown team knock it out of the park. One of my favorite songs of the year.
Mother Mother “Ball Cap” Ball Cap is one of Ryan’s first MM songs and one of his most favorites. It shows the band was hitting home runs from their first record.

the interview show: Spaceship For Sale!

This week, we go from crazy to insane! Not only do I have industry expert Justin on the show to talk about his new blog, Spaceship For Sale, but I decide to test his knowledge of the industry by getting three local bands to ask him questions!
So this week, we’ve also got Tristan from DBL Dragon, Rob from Eeek! and Kyle from Vinyl Theory.
Enjoy the chaos. :)

Mother Mother “The Stand” Justin’s favorite song right now. For me, it’s great to see this Quadra Island group put out a really awesome track.
DBL Dragon “Holiday” Tristan tells me this song is about “getting it on,” which he tells me is “the best!” I agree.
Eeek! “Lake Soux” This unreleased gem is about Rob spending a great day with his loved ones.
Vinyl Theory “Ghana” White Rock’s favorite prog rockers are looking for a singer. Here is one of their songs… all it needs is a great voice!
