One of the toughest tricks in being a pop musician is creating music that feels current, and yet sets itself apart from it’s peers. In the midst of Vancouver’s indie scene, Synthcake rears it’s mast. The band makes a unique blend of electronic pop music that leaves many other local acts feeling just a tad generic. Believe it or not, Lana Pitre, frontlady and songstress of Synthcake, gets away with making indie-electro-circus pop, this is honestly the best way to describe what you hear.

Molding Through the Seasons is their freshly released EP. The five tracks offer a rich blend between hallucinative and haunting lady voices, and bouncing carnival grooves that are just plain fun.

Kindness is the musical alias of UK-based singer songwriter Adam Bainbridge, a dude that holds more mystery than the Weeknd. Bainbridge made major waves at SXSW this year, captivating audiences with his dreamy vocals and alternative take on chillwave dance music.

He recently released his debut LP entitled World, You Need a Change of Mind  via Terrible/Casablanca, which is set for a US release on May 8. And to get a taste for the albums sound, check out his latest single House, a track this is sure to make you fall in love with his long hair and delicate features.

Young Liars will be joined by fellow local acts The Ballantynes and Valley Girl, who have the perfect tunes for this supa chill weather.

I encourage you all to start your week off right with a sexy new single from Hot Chip. My favourite memory of Hot Chip was watching them at Coachella 2010, an older couple standing near me clearly wasn’t diggin’, and said they were just “electronic disco,” which made me wonder what acoustic disco sounds like…

Their new track Flutes is an infectious booty shaker, and it’s going to be on their new album “In Our Heads” which comes out in June on Domino Records.

Hot Chip is hitting The Commodore on September 15th which feels like 5 billion years from now but you can get tickets now and they’re going fast.

Since it’s release, Teen Dreams has become a staple to any indie listener’s album diet. Two years since it’s release, the songs still feel refreshing and powerful, but another release would certainly be welcome. Beach House’s new track, Myths, picks up where they left off in a sonically familiar territory, but the mood of the lyrics is excitingly different.

Beach House’s new LP “Bloom” will be out on May 15th via Sub Pop.

Meg Myers was my birthday gift from the musical heavens. On the morning of February 15, the day I turned 23, I randomly stumbled upon “After You” on Tumblr, a track that Myers had released only the day before.  It’s raw and emotionally disturbing, but here lies the true beauty behind this exceptional new talent.

Myers is reminiscent of old-school Alanis Morissette, as her music is infused with a playful anger that is extremely endearing and nothing short of hypnotic.  Her new EP “Daughter in the Choir” will quickly become the soundtrack for anyone who is madly in love or mad at love.

Put simply, Myers is a breath of fresh air.  She’s a blatant reminder that femininity and girl power can still co-exist in the music industry, and that there’s room for females beyond the confines of mainstream pop music.

During the process of listening to her music, you can’t help but develop questions regarding the identity behind this tortured yet beautiful new voice. So, here’s what I’ve found out.

Myers is incredibly mysterious, in a way that only increases her virtual sex appeal. She’s a former Jehovah’s Witness from Tennessee who is now living in the City of Angels. Her beauty is naturally captivating which bodes well for her dream of fucking Steve Martin and marrying Mark Knopfler. And lastly, art for Myers is not just a hobby or leisurely past time but rather a complicated lifestyle that is almost biological in nature. Okay, I made the last part up but I’m pretty sure it’s true.

While my cyber stalking may have fallen short, hopefully my interview with the mystifying Myers will answer all the questions you never thought to ask.

1. Describe Meg Myers in five words or less.

2, When did you realize that music was your calling? 

My mom played guitar and piano and sang a lot and my dad would play guitar and sing(folk/country) whenever I’d visit him. So i’m not sure exactly what age but probably started around 8 or 9 and became serious about it around 12-13. I always drew and made little comic books and me and my siblings would put on plays and skits for my family. I loved and still love all art/entertainment but music has definitely been the easiest way for me to express myself.

3. If you were banned to a deserted Island and could only bring one thing with you, what would it be and why?

An interstellar teleporter. So I wouldn’t be stranded.

4. What makes for a good love song?

Pain, in a good sort of way. Falling in love is painful and inspiring. Beautiful and scary. This sounds super fucking cheesy, i’m trying to do my best to explain it. Musically, i dont know… the love songs that really touch me are the sad or dark sounding ones. Even if the lyrics are romantic.

5. How would you seduce Mark Knopfler aka your future husband?

How do you know that i haven’t already..

6. What was your life like before using Instagram? 

Empty.. souless.. Instagram has taught me the true meaning of life.

7. Where would you like to be this time next year?

I’d like to have a place in NY(and to be touring of course!). That way I can be in the city for my work but be thousands of miles closer to my family and friends. and I miss the weather. Going from growing up in rain, hurricanes, tornados and snowstorms, then moving to LA, you begin to get very bored.

I used to live in a West End studio apartment years ago where the entire building was made of brick and concrete. So the soundproofing was absolutely amazing and I could put my tunes on blast at 3 AM on a Tuesday night and my next door neighbour would not hear a single thing.

This is one of the tracks I remember maxing the volume out on. controller.controller are from Toronto. Sadly, according to their Myspace blog the band members have moved on to other projects and it looks like the future of controller.controller is up in the air. Booooooo.

Gang Gang Dance are certainly an interesting bunch. For some reason, there are people out there with a serious hate on for the experimental group from NYC (yes, yes, I like to read blog comments when the mood strikes me). The flipside is there are throngs of people who absolutely love them.

Despite their ability to polarize the masses, you can’t deny their unique sound.

Thing is, I don’t wear gold silkscreened everything, incessantly talk about myself, or follow UFC… soooo it’s kinda sorta hard to relate.

While I was being mistaken for someone who would care to listen, the voice in my head: “Dude, isn’t “MANswers” on?”
