Winnie TV Ep-1 / Local Natives
Our pals, Local Natives have been blowing up, I give them 6 months till they make their Letterman / SNL debut.
They were in British newspaper, The Guardian’s, new band of the day feature today.
The guys are currently traveling 44 hours straight from the house in Silverlake they share to New York to play the Bowery Ballroom and an Eastern tour.
They are making it back to Canada passing through Toronto & Montreal, June 11th & 12th. Check out more of their dates here.
If they’re passing through your city, go and see them. They are very much live musicians and will blow you away. They are also really nice guys so if you see them, go and say hi!
I am greatly honored to have had them do their first international tour date at our Winnie Cooper / No More Strangers night.
We made a lil video about their trip for a new thing were doing called Winnie-TV. Hope you like it! It features an interview, a live take away show, and footage from their performance. It also features their pals, The Union Line who played as well. They will be right behind them, so be on the look out! Their self titled debut is bad ass.
Here are some tunes from both bands that they recorded at Daytrotter!
Local Natives – Cards & Quarters
The Union Line – Rich Man’s Tune
The Union Line – Mama Don’t Care
Oh and here’s some bonus footage from the after party that didn’t make the cut and probably shouldn’t be shown.
Green like a $20

Toronto based, Go Green has remixed two of the current best Canadian indie sensations. More like this please.

My fave indie rock darlings the Bombay Bicycle Club are about to go viral.
After releasing a few well received eps the youngsters have been signed to Island and have their debut album, “I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose” coming out in June.

Matt & Kim Photos
New Photos from the Jan 28th, Matt & Kim show at the Biltmore are up.
The show was pretty damn spectacular. Their odb and other hip hop covers were a charm. it was Matt’s 27th birthday and the crowd sang him happy birthday at the end. There album, “Grand” just came out this month and is really frickin’ good.
Expect big things in 2k9 from this adorable little duo.

What The Haps Indie Rock?

My latest secret indie-rock crush is, Maps & Atlases.
They’re part of Chicago’s ongoing bid as the most musical city ever. What’s with that, btw?
“The foursome initially met at a Chicago art school in 2004, combining their individual interests in art, literature, film, and music for an enigmatic post-rock-inspired sound”.

They’ve only released two EPs worth of material, spending a great deal of time building up a following through touring.
From their latest release, You Me and the Mountain
And this from their first release Trees, Swallows, Houses (2006)

Winnie favorite and Calgary native, Chad VanGaalen has been making quite the splash with his latest album Soft Airplane which came out this past September.
This indie-dance banger from the album has been playing on repeat.
As well as being a talented artist and animator, VanGaalen has also been keeping busy producing the debut album for label mates, Women which came out on Flemish Eye this past July.
The Born Ruffians

Toronto indie faves, “Born Ruffians” are coming to town October 10th, playing Richard’s. Their album, “Red, Yellow & Blue” which came out in May is up for the best album award by the Toronto XM station The Verge.
At their last Vancouver stint the band played a low key show last March at the Media club which was subsequently listed as one of the best shows of the last year in the current Georgia Straight “Best Of” issue.
If that’s not enough to convince you have a listen.
From their forthcoming EP, “Little Garcon” which features some new tracks and another remix by Four Tet. Coming out September 30th.
