Generationals – Put a Light On

Generationals

This song is like liquid Prozac. I want to bottle it up and take it everywhere with me.

Brett – Visions (The Soundmen Remix)

Brett - Visions (The Soundmen Remix)

Vancouver’s weather as of late has awakened my emo sensibilities and made me miss those late-night sea wall walks with my imaginary bb. I’m hoping this dream-pop jam will make me feel better, if only for a little while.

Lafayette – Mauvaise Mine (Jupiter remix)

A few years ago I came across Jupiter via their stellar debut ‘Starlighter‘ on Valerie (you’ve probably heard it on those compilations played in clothing stores for rich white tweens). The tune even became my morning alarm clock, to the dismay of the person I was dating. Alarm clock vs radio debate aside – the Parisian disco/electrofunk duo recently gave away their poppy new remix of fellow French act Lafayette.

Interview: Tough Lovers

Tough Lovers

We’ve finally reached that inevitable part of December, when we all reflect upon the triumphs and trails of the past year. In regards to music, 2012 has seen great things come out of the Vancouver music scene. Not only did local duo Japandroids release one of the best records of the year with “Celebration Rock”, but the Peak Performance Project also showcased some amazing up-and-coming talent.  Among PPP’s standout artists were Tough Lovers, a band that consists of four dudes with standout personalities and even better tunes. And yes ladies, they’re all really good looking. Hey Dane ;).

Tough Lovers

Although they formed back in 2010, the boys from Tough Lovers have really come into their own these past 11 months. They released their sophomore EP entitled “Good Morning” in March, toured with BESTiE across Western Canada, and of course were finalists in PPP.

In terms of sound, Tough Lovers make some of the finest indie-pop this city has to offer. It’s what I like to call multi-purpose music, as you can blast their tunes during a heavy make-out session with your boo and/or at a weekday turnt fest that includes some special herbal remedies. Moreover, their authentic mainstream appeal is sure to garner them much attention in the coming months.

The boys will be playing at Fortune Sound Club this evening for “An East Van Christmas”, which is helping to raise funds for the St. James Music Academy. The night will also see performances by Cyril Hahn, Fine Times, Young Braised, Gang Signs, No Sinner, and more. Advanced tickets are only $15 and you can purchase them online or at Red Cat, Zulu, Dipt, Beatstreet, and Highlife Records. And be sure to check out my interview below, because you might just find out what bb means.

An East Van Christmas Fortune

1.What is the preferred Fruit Juice of Tough Lovers?
Does flavoured vodka count?

2.Best Tough Lovers make out song?

3.Give us a working definition of BB:
It’s a mating call and something a very horny person says a lot whilst on tour in a van with 8 guys.
*From Urban Dictionary: Short for “baby”, used by men on cam websites when their right hand is too busy to reach for the Y key.

4.You recently finished up a tour with fellow Vancouver band BESTiE, is the lead singer really a pervert?
Pervert is a strong word. He isn’t a pervert, but he is definitely one of the horniest men I’ve ever spent a week in a van with.

5.Tell us a silly story from tour?
Teddy (Ryan), got extremely intoxicated one night in Calgary, and puked for 9 straight hours the next day. Almost had to cancel two gigs because he was so hungover. Probably the most hungover we’ve ever seen anybody ever.

Party
7.What is the Tough Lovers groupie situation like?
You know how when you’re sitting at a bar and you’re like “wow I’m drunk” and then you’re friend says “wait till you stand up”. Well I saw a guy in a motorized wheelchair dressed in a santa suit in a bar and he claimed to be drunk. So I told him “wait till you stand up”. It’s kinda like that.

Santa

8.UGG Boots, hot or not?
Generally not hot, but it depends how turnt the bb wearing them gets us.

9.As a dude, how do you know if your pants are too tight?
If your testicles feel like they’re going to explode, then your pants are too tight. If there is too much side pipe showing, they are also probably too tight.
Tight Pants

10. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, what actor would play each member of Tough Lovers?
Jamie – Mel Gibson
Dane- David Duchovny
*Note: David Duchovny previously went to rehab for an addiction to internet porn.
Graham- Bill Murray
Teddy- Zac Efron

11. We’re nearing the end of 2012 and thus the end of the world; give us a few of your favorites:

Best Album(s):
Dr. Dre – Chronic 2001
Father John Misty – Fear Fun
Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Belong
Grizzly Bear – Shields
The Morning Benders – Big Echo
St. Vincent – Strange Mercy
Dry the River – Shallow Bed

Best Song(s):
On an On – Ghosts
Grizzly Bear – Yet Again
Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues
Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Strange
Bestie – Foolish Hearts
Fields of Green – Kill it Slow

Best Live Show:
St. Vincent at Sasquatch 2012 was fucking dope.

12.Best Tough Lovers Performance:
Definitely not our first show ever at Pat’s Pub. We are going to get really turnt for all the bb’s at The East Van Xmas party. We also once raised over 5k for charity at one single show, so that was pretty awesome.

13.What can we expect from Tough Lovers at an East Van Christmas on December
You can expect things to get so turnt that they’ll be tornt.
Turnt Up

Sleigh Bells – Slow it Down (Video)

Alexis Krauss’ makes my nipples hard and I know I’m not the only one. Slow it Down was directed by bandmate Derek Miller, who rides a bike in double denim for the majority of this video. I guess he’s alright too.
