Americana?

Don’t we all wish we had been born on the bayou?

I know I’d love to run shirtless through a wheat field in the summer time, ride bikes down the ol’ dirt path, or as one of my favorite Americana bands, Canned Heat, would say “I’m going where the water tastes like wine, We can jump in the water, stay drunk all the time”.

The funny thing about Americana is, its not really that American is it? Some of the best bands in this genre where in fact, Canadian. The Band and Neil Young being some of the more notable acts. In reality Americana is just a form of roots, or folk, or rock, or country, or blues…or anything really!

To me Americana is more a feeling than a genre and nothing brings up that feeling that my absolute favorite group Creedence Clearwater Revival. Now I’ll admit that I get a lot of flack for eagerly, and often, announcing my undying love for John Fogerty and his rag tag group southern rockers.”Dude, this is the whitest music in the world!” I’ve heard more than once. “This has NO SOUL!” yeah, i’ve heard that one too. Could these statements have been any more incorrect!? NO THEY FUCKING COULDN’T! I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if you have a problem with Creedence, your probably on too much ecstasy and need to go for a hike in the woods… for about three or four years. And thank the lord, this genre is finally making its reemergence.

Ol’ Bruce Springsteen (another artist I’ve always been ragged on for loving) has never been more popular, acts like The Gaslight Anthem and Blizten Trapper are hugely popular, one of Canada’s biggest indie bands around Attack In Black draws heavily from said genre.

And finally a local band I now love, Buffalo Swans are helping to give everyone’s head a shake. Check Buffalo Swans out this weekend at the funky winkerbean with your favourite people in the whole world, The No More Stangers: ultraviolent, ultrahappy, ultraglitterinfused, ultranotcoveredinbodyhair, ultrafriendlyunlessyousmelllikeadeaddog Dance CREW!
