Indie icon Dan Boeckner is perhaps best known for his role in the legendary mid-2000s post-punk indie rock band Wolf Parade. Since Wolf Parade (sadly) went on hiatus, Boeckner was involved in a project called Divine Fits (with Spoon frontman Britt Daniel) and he started Handsome Furs (with his ex-wife Alexei Perry). Currently, Boeckner has a new band called Operators. Last Gang Records will release the Operators debut full length, Blue Wave, on April 1, 2016.
I chatted with the entire Operators line up including Boeckner (on vocals, guitar, and synths), drummer Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks and Divine Fits) and electro-wiz Devojka. Somehow I get this trio to talk about everything including Louis CK, using sex to sell, how Dan and Sam met, being a complete dick, Dave from Japandroids, how collaboration works in Operators, and the beauty of starting over again.
I think this is the only interview I’ve done with a group hug. You’ll have to listen.
Tracks played on the show…
1) Operators, “Ecstasy In My House” single (2015) (mp3)
2) Operators, EP 1 (2014) “Truth”
3) Divine Fits, A Thing Called Divine Fits (2012) “Flaggin’ A Ride” **
4) Operators, EP 1 (2014) “Start Again” (mp3)
ALL songs CANCON except **
Operators return to Vancouver, Tuesday, April 5th, at the Fortune Sound Club (with Bogan Via and Low Levels). Here’s your chance to see Dan Boeckner and company live. See you there!

Check out an exclusive premier of title track from it, Farewell. The track melds Yuki’s haunting vocals over ukelele which builds into thick sparse beats to excellent effect.

We’ve finally reached that inevitable part of December, when we all reflect upon the triumphs and trails of the past year. In regards to music, 2012 has seen great things come out of the Vancouver music scene. Not only did local duo Japandroids release one of the best records of the year with “Celebration Rock”, but the Peak Performance Project also showcased some amazing up-and-coming talent. Among PPP’s standout artists were Tough Lovers, a band that consists of four dudes with standout personalities and even better tunes. And yes ladies, they’re all really good looking. Hey Dane ;).
Although they formed back in 2010, the boys from Tough Lovers have really come into their own these past 11 months. They released their sophomore EP entitled “Good Morning” in March, toured with BESTiE across Western Canada, and of course were finalists in PPP.
In terms of sound, Tough Lovers make some of the finest indie-pop this city has to offer. It’s what I like to call multi-purpose music, as you can blast their tunes during a heavy make-out session with your boo and/or at a weekday turnt fest that includes some special herbal remedies. Moreover, their authentic mainstream appeal is sure to garner them much attention in the coming months.
The boys will be playing at Fortune Sound Club this evening for “An East Van Christmas”, which is helping to raise funds for the St. James Music Academy. The night will also see performances by Cyril Hahn, Fine Times, Young Braised, Gang Signs, No Sinner, and more. Advanced tickets are only $15 and you can purchase them online or at Red Cat, Zulu, Dipt, Beatstreet, and Highlife Records. And be sure to check out my interview below, because you might just find out what bb means.
1.What is the preferred Fruit Juice of Tough Lovers?
Does flavoured vodka count?
2.Best Tough Lovers make out song?
3.Give us a working definition of BB:
It’s a mating call and something a very horny person says a lot whilst on tour in a van with 8 guys.
*From Urban Dictionary: Short for “baby”, used by men on cam websites when their right hand is too busy to reach for the Y key.
4.You recently finished up a tour with fellow Vancouver band BESTiE, is the lead singer really a pervert?
Pervert is a strong word. He isn’t a pervert, but he is definitely one of the horniest men I’ve ever spent a week in a van with.
5.Tell us a silly story from tour?
Teddy (Ryan), got extremely intoxicated one night in Calgary, and puked for 9 straight hours the next day. Almost had to cancel two gigs because he was so hungover. Probably the most hungover we’ve ever seen anybody ever.
7.What is the Tough Lovers groupie situation like?
You know how when you’re sitting at a bar and you’re like “wow I’m drunk” and then you’re friend says “wait till you stand up”. Well I saw a guy in a motorized wheelchair dressed in a santa suit in a bar and he claimed to be drunk. So I told him “wait till you stand up”. It’s kinda like that.
8.UGG Boots, hot or not?
Generally not hot, but it depends how turnt the bb wearing them gets us.
9.As a dude, how do you know if your pants are too tight?
If your testicles feel like they’re going to explode, then your pants are too tight. If there is too much side pipe showing, they are also probably too tight.
10. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, what actor would play each member of Tough Lovers?
Jamie – Mel Gibson
Dane- David Duchovny
*Note: David Duchovny previously went to rehab for an addiction to internet porn.
Graham- Bill Murray
Teddy- Zac Efron
11. We’re nearing the end of 2012 and thus the end of the world; give us a few of your favorites:
Dr. Dre – Chronic 2001
Father John Misty – Fear Fun
Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Belong
Grizzly Bear – Shields
The Morning Benders – Big Echo
St. Vincent – Strange Mercy
Dry the River – Shallow Bed
On an On – Ghosts
Grizzly Bear – Yet Again
Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues
Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Strange
Bestie – Foolish Hearts
Fields of Green – Kill it Slow
Best Live Show:
St. Vincent at Sasquatch 2012 was fucking dope.
12.Best Tough Lovers Performance:
Definitely not our first show ever at Pat’s Pub. We are going to get really turnt for all the bb’s at The East Van Xmas party. We also once raised over 5k for charity at one single show, so that was pretty awesome.
13.What can we expect from Tough Lovers at an East Van Christmas on December
You can expect things to get so turnt that they’ll be tornt.
Interview by @clarkbs
There’s officially one month left in 2012. Thus, you have 31 more days to do terrible things before you make those dreaded New Year resolutions to be a better person. This also might be your last month on earth, so you have no excuses to not party.
On December 19, Fortune Sound Club will be throwing an epic end of the world party with some of the best local talent Vancouver has to offer. An East Van Christmas will feature The Zola’s, No Sinner, Cyril Hahn, Young Braised, Gang Signs, Fine Times, Tough Lovers, Bankrobber, and Gold & Youth. And if this event couldn’t get any sweeter, it will also double as a charity event for the St. James Music Academy, a music program for underprivileged youth in the Downtown East Side. The night will be hosted by the Ryan and Amy Show, with tunes coming from DJ Jonny Grayston (East Van Soul Club) between sets.
Advanced tickets are only $15 and can be purchased online or at Red Cat, Zulu, Dipt, Beatstreet, and Highlife records. If I’m doing the math correctly, that’s less than $2.00 per act. Let’s give 2012 a proper send off! Happy Holidays bb’s.

Unfortunately for some of you this is your last weekend of freedom before departing on yet another year of educational hell. Okay, maybe that’s taking things to the extreme but we still wanna send you off in style.
Over at the Cobalt our bb’s GANG SIGNS will be celebrating the release of their latest EP with lots of PBR and hipsta babes. You can check out their new music here. I’m pretty sure its the future <3. Vancouver fashion icon and Winnie DJ Christian Flores will also be making it rain on the dancefloor.
Childhood prodigy, future Jeopardy contestant and Winnie Cooper cofounder @TristanOrchard will be down at the Waldorf, spinning tunes before L.A. based DJ Goldroom aka Josh Legg makes you tinkle in your pants.
Lastly, for all you house lovers, FIVESIXTY is going big with M.A.N.D.Y for their last CIRQUE event of the summer. Patrick will be throwing down some solid club tunes until 3:00am.
Here comes the best part. We’re giving away two tickets for EACH event and all you gotta do is email win.e.coop.r(@)gmail.com telling us your information and the event you want to attend. It’s first come first served with the contest ending at 5:00pm SHARP. Please use Re: Ticket Giveaway in the subject line. Coo?
See you tonight!

Do you remember that rare moment in high school where everything, including the future, seemed promising beyond belief? Where regardless of your academic standings or hormonal altercations with the parental unit, your life as you knew it then was content and all you needed was the Bonnie to your Clyde.
If you could bottle up those feelings of lustful hallucinations and teenage intoxication, you’d get the music produced by newcomer’s Ladyfrnd. Consisting of Peter Ricq (Humans, Gang Signs) and his actual lady love Yuki Holland.
Yes, their self-titled debut of five songs is simple but within their simplicity lays pure brilliance. The opening track is hauntingly beautiful, as you play witness to a couple fighting over the consequences that ultimately come from taking your career on the road. The rest of the EP plays the same way. It tells a story of a young couple living through a storybook romance and letting the outside world witness the complications that follow. It’s raw, heartbreaking and at the very end, unbelievably inspiring.
For all you single girls out there, I highly suggest buying a pint of Ben and Jerry’s before you listen to this. Download the pull EP here.
