Reuben and the Dark is a indie rock band (with tinges of country) from Calgary fronted by Reuben Bullock. I met Reuben while we were both in Banff last summer. (I was in Banff for the Banff World Media Festival where the band performed.) Reuben took a break from recording to join me at a farmer’s market to chat about his record Funeral Sky. The big story behind this record is that he worked with Chris Hayden from UK mega-group Florence + the Machine on a few of the tracks.
Reuben and the Dark are currently on tour with Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy, so this year will see increased visibility and a new record from the band.
I get shy but nice guy Reuben to talk about… His secret past as a skateboarder… How he met Florence + the Machine‘s drummer Chris Hayden by chance in Mexico… Then telling Chris that Reuben couldn’t use some of the tracks they made together… Getting slammed against the wall by Canadian border officers… And much more. Listen to our chat!

Try typing Daughter into your Google search engine and you’ll be sure to find results varying from “female offspring” to “a shapeshifting humanoid ”. However, upon a closer look you might just discover a true musical gem.
As i’m writing this, a dub step version of Daughter’s “Youth” sits atop of Hype Machine’s most popular songs on blogs. And while this track is sure to soothe your soul, its nothing compared to the real thing.
Daughter aka Elena Tonra is a 21-year-old singer/songwriter from the U.K, who has the lyrical maturity of someone twice her age. She released her second EP “Wild Youth” in November of last year and it holds enough romantic angst to re-sink the Titanic.
While listening to the EP in its entirety, I couldn’t help but wonder if she was ghost writing my life and/or the life of most teenage girls growing up in the new millennium. You’ll begin the record on “Home”, where you’ll meet a sexually deprived young adult and end on “Love”, with an emotionally bruised young woman who makes desperation seem utterly desirable. It’s oddly tortured but still wildly approachable.
I could make comparisons to Florence and the Machine but it won’t do her music justice. You need to hear it in order to fully experience what I’m talking about. Get ready to blow a musical load.
Check out “Wild Youth” on bandcamp.
