RITON w/ RadioZero DJs Cam Dales & Tyler Fedchuk

Winnie loves St. Patrick’s Day, kissing the Irish is one of our favorite pastimes. So, we’re teaming up with Intimate Productions and RadioZero to throw an event that is sure to make our leprechaun friends smirk with envy. And of course banging music will be involved. Riton, with RadioZero DJ’s Cam Dales and Tyler Fedchuck, will be helping us celebrate at the Electric Owl on Saturday, March 17.
Riton aka Henry Smithson hails from the United Kingdom, where he has been influencing European dance culture since the early 1990’s. His psychedelic-inspired electro is not only hypnotic but also utterly refreshing.
Doors are at 9pm and early bird tickets are only $12.00…way more reasonable than the outlandish cover that every bar in downtown Vancouver will be charging and they won’t have any hipster babes. Now that you’ve made up your mind, tickets will soon be available online but you can also check out the following locations:
BeatStreet Records (439 Hastings)
Puff Uptown (3255 Main St & 16th)
Puff Granville (841 Granville St)
Zulu Records (1972 W 4th Ave)
Red Cat (4332 Main Street)
For more information on group rates visit our event page.

Winnie has had the privilege to preview the new EP and there are some serious chest bursting dance tracks mixed in with some surprisingly thoughtful journeys. You can see Humans at the Winnie Cooper SXSW Showcase in Austin March 17th, as well as Winnie’s showcase in Los Angeles in March 8th at Dim Mak Studios.

Young Liars – Homesick Future EP

Unfortunately for me, I’m a quasi-proud Calgarian. However, every now and then something comes along that makes me wish I had been born in this beautiful place called Vancouver.
Recently, the sheer awesomeness of the local band Young Liars made me reconsider my loyalty to Alberta. Coincidentally enough, I heard about them through Winnie Cooper back in 2010 after they received a tip from drummer Tony Dallas.
Young Liars are special for variety of reasons. You see, not only is the band overflowing with babes (Hay Andrew) but their unique musical blend invokes a youthful maturity that I thought was only possible in my wildest dreams. They’re indie, dance, electro and ultimately everything mainstream pop music should aspire to be. As an added bonus, their attention to lyrical detail makes time travelling back to that kick ass party in the 12th grade a legit possibility. Seriously, if these dudes don’t make you dance, or at least slightly sway your body, you might need to see a medical professional.

They’ve created something that you fall in love with after just one listen and then immediately text your homies to tell them the good news. If you haven’t already checked them out its cool, you’re just a bit of a late bloomer, but then again so was Lindsay Lohan. And luckily, their first release after signing with Nettwerk dropped on Tuesday. I kindly suggest copping the “Homesick Future EP” before you have less street cred than Steve Urkel <3. Check out a sampler here.

The Airplane Boys

I have a confession to make and I’m really not proud of it. I follow emo girls on Tumblr for the sole purpose of mocking their boy crazy binge rants. Why am I telling you this? Well it seems that my despicable antics may have finally paid off. Let me explain.
Late this afternoon a YouTube video with the caption “Super Cute :)” showed up on my newsfeed. The video opened with two indie couples partaking in urban activities while a digitally inspired beat played in the background. Just as I was about to close the window, a dude in a Levi’s denim jacket started spitting something futuristic. To my surprise, this was actually the official music video for a track entitled “Gold Ribbons” by the Airplane Boys, a Canadian duo from T.O.
Shortly after this humbling experience, I downloaded their mixtape “Where’ve You Been” and quickly realized that I wasn’t the only one intrigued by this electro R&B dream team. The Airplane Boys, which consists of Beck Motley and Bon Voyag, have worked with Illangelo, one of the Weeknd’s producers, and toured with Mac Miller, J.Cole, Snoop Dogg, and the list goes on. With their first release you’ll see a sampling of the Arcade Fire and lyrics that rival Frank Ocean’s with their tortured quirkiness.

The Airplane Boys – Born to Be
Their follow up mixtape “Alignment” is set to drop on February 16, with two singles (“New Blood” and “Dictate”) already available for download. These tracks are sure to put you in a dopeness induced coma, as they somehow blend together electronic, urban, and indie pop, without sounding like T-Pain. Yet, what stand’s out the most is Motely and Voyag’s attention to lyrical detail. The cultural references are a plenty and they offer a social commentary that is both incredibly refreshing and disturbingly accurate.
You definitely want to give these guys a listen because next year they’ll be all over the mainstream.
