Vancouver’s own dj SadGirl has teamed up with ClubKnights to put out a mini-mix just shy of 16 minutes, fulla footwork vibes – which is perfect for an energy boost or a quick turn up. If you’re keen to know more about SG, below is a short interview below the tracklist.
Sol Speech – Areas 2
DJ Rashad – Drank, Kush, Barz
DJ Bake ft DJ Uniique & DJ Smack – Booty Bounce Anthem (DJ Paypal Remix)
Ice Underlord – Down On Me
DJ Boy Drama – Reacquainted
Ticklish – Rescue Me
Ultrademon & KP & Envy – You’re So Wet / Shawty Swing My Way (DJ Hoodboi Remix)
CK: Tell us how you got started as a DJ
SG: While I was in audio school (est 2012) I’d made friends with a couple of DJs in my class. They’d spin after class on Fridays and it looked hella fun, so one of them showed me how to work Traktor on his controller. I’d already learned about EQing frequencies, song structure, fx, etc in school – so I guess I picked it up easily. Growing up as a dancer made me subconsciously aware of rhythm, so I’d say that helped a lot too.
I think some people may have pegged me as a band wagoner, but music has always been a huge part of my life – growing up with a family of musicians, dancing and playing music. It felt like a natural progression to end up where I am now.
CK: What are your other talents?
SG: I grew up dabbling with instruments; guitar, bass, drums – but I really love singing, writing and I’m quietly learning production with Ableton. I’m using the alias “vzns” (pronounced visions) as a creative outlet for song writing.
CK: What do you listen to when you’re not listening to Dance music?
SG: Damn… this is always a hard question because I love so much.
Lately I’ve been listening to: Melody’s Echo Chamber, King Krule, Tame Impala, Venetian Snares, Fiona Apple, Flying Lotus, Zero 7, DJ Shadow, Sun Ra, Lianne La Havas, Shaprece, Portishead, Them Crooked Vultures, Bjork, Queens of the Stone Age, Sia, Banks… People who inspire me the most.
There’s a lot of amazing electronic music coming out of Vancouver that isn’t necessarily dance music; like what’s happening in Chapel Sound and Mountainous Collective. I’m very blessed & inspired to be surrounded by such talent.
CK: What would you like to hear or see more of in 2014?
SG: More original, inspiring music. As much as I adore the admiration and creative interpretation expressed through sampling and the use vocal acapellas… I’d love to see something more. I do love R&B and ladies like Ciara, Brandy, etc – but I’d love to see some light shown on up and coming vocalists. I love what Banks, Jhene Aiko, Jojo, Niki Randa & Solange are doing. I swear, If I hear one more Body Party remix… (lol)
CK: What’s next for SadGirl?
SG: I’m working on edits and remixes, more mixes… I played a show in Seattle recently with Ekali, opening for Falcons – I’d love to book more out of town shows. That was way too much fun.
As far as vzns goes; I’ve got a collab thing going on with Ekali and The Oneiroscopist – which remains nameless until we find something proper. We aim to release a 5 track EP this spring. Also, I’d like to put out a mixtape featuring producers I dig from all over.
