Friday Anthem

This is Matthew Wilder’s one solo hit. He later went on to produce No Doubt’s, “Magic Kingdom” album.
Happy Friday!

I miss the suburbs for the records.
I knew nothing about this group when I found the record several years ago at some Value Village in the suburbs. I looked at the cover and immediately thought, “Whoa. It’s like a bohemian Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. And High INERGY? Is that a typo? This MUST be sweet.” It cost me $1.
It turns out I’d end up finding a track that I would fully rinse the following year.
Then I forgot all about it until today when I was checking out some Debarge YouTube vid. It’s a tightly composed 80s disco funk track complete with farting synthy sounds.

Check out the extra kicks at around 3:10!
Heads up: This is someone else’s slightly dodgy rip (there are some minor pops/clicks and the pitch flutters a bit). If you’re into a proper vinyl rip, let me know and I can get my ass in gear to finally do it… or if you’ve got a cleaner copy, please hit us back. Sharing is caring.
Haven’t You Heard

Of course you’re familiar with the ever popular Forget Me Nots and probably even Remind Me, both from the highly recommended 1982 album Straight From The Heart.
Besides being soooo heavily sampled, Patrice Rushen is also a classically trained pianist. The keys figure prominently in this amazing, lesser known track here:

The original by itself is so nice, there’s really no need to sample or tweak much… but the track might sound familiar. Woop woop!
Kano or Kano

I think international trademark laws say that you can keep an artist or band name for up to 20 years (depending on when it was registered… it’s only 10 years if you registered the trademark later than 1989). Whatever, it’s complicated.
Kano is known for Italo talk box bangers while Kano, formerly of the N.A.S.T.Y. Crew, reps London town.
It’s not surprising that the first Kano is so heavily sampled. It’s all just brilliant stuff. I think the band had some sort of flux capacitor. Check out 1980s ‘I’m Ready’ and 1983s ‘Another Life’.
Kano the MC just released his third album since 2005 titled 140 Grime St (buy it HERE). The production on this single here sounds a bit Southern like T.I.‘s joints, no?
ps. Yeah that’s an LP ghetto blaster… it can play either side of the record without having to flip it. So it plays upright and there are two tone arms built in to the thing. Wow.
French Pharrell? LOL!

I’ve seen DJ Mehdi do his thing a number of times. I gotta say, it’s always a good time. The dude always comes through with his best game and it’s quite the show that he puts on. Vancouver gets another chance to see the Ed Banger all star this week. I see you there, yes?
Turn ons: Craigslist Ads, Long Walks.
