Kiddy Smile. What’s Up?

Kiddy Smile is a French singer from the Town Rambouillet near Paris.
He is better known for his dancing skills in music videos having appeared in Yelle, DatA, Yuksek , Daft Punk and George Michael videos.
Over here in North America, his unique style has been getting him the most attention. In Paris he has worked as a stylist for Kanye West as well as local celebrities.
Hipster Runnoff wrote an article a few weeks ago on one of his outfits. I AM THE MODERN ICE CREAM MAN

Annd Diplo recently picture tweeted him.

Music wise, he recently performed at the Coachella Festival with The Gossip where he sung a Grace Jones cover with the group.

As well, he sang vocals over the Designer Drugs track “Zombies” and make a music video for it. The duo liked it so much they decided to release it as a single.

Stop Being Naive Haters

What’s up with all the dubstep haters? I’m coming across a lot people who are unnecessarily aggro towards it and it’s odd.
Is it just too much of a departure from the current music climate of bad electro remixes and bedroom mashes from trust fund kids getting their parents to buy them Ableton and Serato? Could it be that a shift towards dubstep is too much to handle for those who are completely invested in a genre that is probably having difficulty finding new ways to be inventive? Or does it just seem too weird?
I don’t know the answer, but it’s probably a combination of things.
Sure, I can appreciate that dubstep is dark and spooky (believe me, Caspa and Rusko give me nightmares sometimes too), but you’re being naive if you aren’t recognizing the influence dubstep is having on next level music production on both indie and pop records. Everything from Rihanna, Major Lazer, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga… the list goes on and on.
Sooooo, haters… don’t be afraid of the unknown. You know those weird new sounds you’re hearing on that track you like? Yeah, those ones. It came from dubstep.

Let’s Get Together

Okay okay okay.
It’s back to school time and we need to get together to celebrate something. Soooooo the Winnie Cooper DJs are taking over the Metropole (aka the Met) in Gastown!
I’m gonna wear my best oxford shirt and we’re gonna play the funnest songs EVER IN THE WORLD. That means big time pop joints, cheese rock crowd pleasers, the best electro remixes, dancey indie jams, rap favourites, 90s…
This long weekend Sunday, round up some friends and shine up your dancing brogues. This will be super duper! Plus we’ll bring some candy and you can have a piece.
Dance Area – AA 24/7 (Diplo Remix)
La Roux – In For The Kill (Twelves Remix)

the interview show: rye rye

If you haven’t heard of Rye Rye (aka Ryeisha Berrain), yet, you soon will.
She got her start in the Baltimore underground scene and gained a solid following for her dancing (check out her on youtube) and her unique voice and delivery.
Rye Rye was discovered by Baltimore superstar DJ Blaqstarr (who was a friend of her big sister). From there, Diplo got involved; then M.I.A. heard her and decided to mentor the young rapper. Oh yeah… did I mention she has just graduated from high school this year?
Rye Rye (featuring M.I.A.) “Bang” (Buraka Som Sistema Canivale Remix) Bang is easily the song of this summer and the spiritual daughter of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes”. I put up the Buraka Som Sistema remix cuz BSS need waaay more ups.
Rye Rye “Wassup Wassup” (Crookers remix) The song that started it all, remixed by Italy’s crazy dance floor demons.
Rye Rye was supposed to be back in town this summer opening for A-Trak, but she had to pull out! But she will be back soon when her full length drops.

2008 Top 20 Tracks… according to Flores

Well, the year is almost officially over and it couldn’t come soon enough… it’s time for my TOP TWENTY SONGS OF 2008!
You know I’ve never been the kind of person who could say with full conviction which movie is my favourite of all time or what the best restaurant is. See, I find it will almost always be dependent on how you feel at that particular point in time.
Of course, music is the same way. Even the most mundane routine in your day to day life can be perfectly captured by some song. And that song at that exact moment is the best song there could be… (Garden State would not have been as good a movie without that amazing soundtrack)
So anyways, it goes without saying then that I had some difficulty selecting my TOP TWENTY.
There are definitely songs on my list that have been fully rinsed in 2008. But hey what can I say? I ain’t no snob… I’m a fan of pop music just as much as I am a fan of the indie and sub-pop jams.
I won’t bore you with a commentary on each track.
Here are twenty 2008 tracks that have stood out to me… haters, get your hate on:
20. Metronomy – A Thing For Me (Mad Decent’s B-Live Miami Mix)
19. Matt & Kim – Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare
18. Santogold – Say Aha (Tepr Remix)
17. The Kills – Cheap and Cheerful
16. Ratatat – Mirando (YACHT Remix)
14. Friend – Secret
13. Mike Jones ft Lil Wayne – I Done Did It
12. Feist – I Feel It All (Escort Remix)
11. Radiohead – Reckoner (Diplo Remix)
10. Kid Cudi – Day ‘N Nite (Crookers Remix)
9. Lykke Li – Little Bit (CSS Remix)
8. Lil Wayne – A Milli (Say-Wut Remix)
7. Ladyhawke – Paris Is Burning (Cut Copy Remix)
6. Treasure Fingers – Cross The Dancefloor (Chromeo Remix)
