the interview show: circlesquare

CircleSquare is the music project fronted by former local boy Jeremy Shaw. Shaw has recently fled Vancouver’s insanely high cost of living for the artist-affordable haven of Berlin, like many other Canadian performers such as the mighty Peaches!
I did a piece for CBC Radio 3 (featuring Jeremy Shaw and Peaches) on Canadians who move. Listen to that here.
Shaw is also an accomplished visual/conceptual artist. Perhaps his most remembered piece is Jeremy Shaw: DMT, where he videotaped people on DMT and their ramblings. Great stuff.
My favourite CircleSquare track is “Fight Sounds Pt 1″ from his last EP. The song didn’t really get a push since his label, Output, went under before the EP even came out. Now CircleSquare are on Ghostly, the same label as Matthew Dear, and they have a new record, Songs About Dancing and Drugs, you can preview the new record here.
I recorded this interview twice. The first time, I got Jeremy to talk in depth about how he sees the link between drugs and music. That interview sadly was lost. Luckily, I got him to talk a little bit about it again.

It is so great to see a local guy get remixed by a world-class talent like Juan. I posted the radio edit here, but the full remix is the real shit.

And here is a special hour-long mix Jeremy has made for you. (Warning: this mix is slow to start, so give it time for the sound to come up.)
CircleSquare’s Super Late Night Music For People In The Dark
Check him out this summer across Europe. Oi! When do we get some North American dates?
