Cadence Weapon – Hope In Dirt City

Cadence Weapon

Ya’ll already know about my undying love for Cadence Weapon aka Rollie so I’ll keep my swooning to a minimum and focus on his music instead.

For the past couple of months Rollie has been teasing us with tweets about new music, even dropping a Grimes collaboration that blew my musical mind.  It’s now been confirmed that he will drop ‘Hope in Dirt City’, the follow up to 2008’s critically acclaimed ‘Afterparty Babies’, on May 29.

Look out for collaborations with Doldrums and Buck 65, as well as a sound that departs from his latest mixtape ‘Tron Legacy’. According to a recent press release, ‘Hope in Dirt City’ is a “clearly defined and emotionally mature statement of intent” which will see Rollie bring hip-hop back to its roots.  Well, I guess if anyone can do its him.

In support of the album, Cadence will be hitting up the Electric Owl on June 22.  In the mean time check out two of his latest tracks “Loft Party” and “Crew Up”.

Cadence Weapon – ’88

Cadence Weapon - '88

While we may be on opposing teams in the battle of Alberta, I can’t help but admire the artistic achievements of Edmonton born rapper Cadence Weapon aka Rollie Pemberton. At 26, Rollie has already been nominated for a Polaris Music Award and held the position of Edmonton’s poet-laureate for two years.

And his lyrical flow? Well that’s also pretty impressive. Rollie carefully crafts masterpieces with his words in order to tell a story that excludes bitches, bling, and booty.

His new joint ’88 is a tribute to old-school hip-hop and it features the original instrumental from ‘Eight’, by fellow Canadian Grimes, as the backing track. And really, you doesn’t want to relive that golden era. It’s short in length but big on content.

Expect more from Cadence in the coming months, his new album ‘Roquentin’ is expected to drop this spring and he will also be making an appearance at SXSW 2012.
