the interview show: Cancer Bats

When I met Liam from Cancer Bats, in the alley behind the Rickshaw, I could not have predicted how off the rails this interview would get. While we chatted, we watched a woman shoot up heroine and I thought this was as wild as it could get. I was wrong!

Before either of us knew it, this interview was hijacked by Chi Pig, the legendary frontman of SNFU. Imagine meeting a member of SNFU in an alley in the DTES?! Then Chi Pig from SNFU literally chased us around and tried to blow smoke up our asses after Liam got a little starstruck.

Somehow, I manage to salvage the conversation and Liam is quite nice to help. This interview is definitely one of my more interesting shows in recent. Take a listen!

the interview show: Tyrow James

Tyrow James is a fellow Surrey boy, so when he emailed me about his new record The Brass Knuckles Effect, I knew I had to have him on the show. Tyrow likes to make tracks that are a dangerous mix of Beastie Boys and Dayglo Abortions. He tells me The Brass Knuckles Effect is a break up record and a document of the last hellish year of his life.

No matter what you think about rap rock or hip hop break up records, Tyrow James is a local character worth checking out.

Warning: This show is not for the faint of heart. :) It is a hip hop interview after all.

Tyrow James “Bombsheel!” Tyrow says this is the best track his record.

Here is a link to his video for “Vanarchy” a track inspired by the Vancouver Riots.

Also, Tyrow is having a CD release party this week! Friday, December 23 at 9:00pm at Olympia Pizza & Restaurant in Surrey.

We are done for the year, so the interview show will be back before you know it with new shows. In the meantime we shall leave you with our favorites. Next week, my personal fav of the year… Skrillex!

the interview show: BranVan 3000

If you were listening to music in the 90s, you will not doubt remember the track “Drinking In LA.” It was one of those songs that was everywhere.

You may not remember the song is by a group of Montrealers called BranVan 3000. Back in the 1997, “Drinking In LA” exploded and suddenly a bunch of friends who had been calling the project an “electronic music collective” were suddenly touring the world and poised to become one of those cross-genre supergroups.

This tsunami of success continued. BV3 got signed to the Beastie Boys‘ prestigious record label and convinced R&B Legend Curtis Mayfield to sing on their second record’s lead single “Astounded.”

Then things turned quickly. The Beastie‘s label imploded, leaving Bran Van 3000 high and dry. “Astounded” turned out to be Mayfield’s final song. And the group seemed to disappear forever.

Good news! The crew is back with a new record The Garden. This week, I talk with BV3 headmaster James DiSalvio about everything from having one of “those songs” and riding that crazy wave of success to getting the old crew back together again and recapturing the magic.

BranVan 3000 “Drinking In LA” The song that changed it all.

BranVan 3000 “Couch Surfing” Another track of their first album.
