After two records with legendary rock band Weezer, Matt Sharp quit as Weezer‘s bassist. He wanted his next project to be less a traditional rock band and more a chance to collaborate with all the musicians he admired, so he formed The Rentals. Even if he couldn’t get his collaborators to leave his or her band permanently, Matt could rent them for enough time to make some music together.
As you can imagine, after three full length albums, Matt Sharp has ended up being the only constant in The Rentals project. He assembles a new set of collaborators each time he records an album or goes on tour. Fun fact: actor Maya Rudolph, of Saturday Night Live and Bridesmaids fame, also handled keyboard and backing vocals for the group’s first tours in support of the debut album, Return of the Rentals. (Check out The Rentals 1996 video for “Waiting” to see Maya in action.)
I hung out with Matt Sharp one nice afternoon in the alley behind Vancouver’s now closed Electric Owl. Matt was in town to promote the newest Rentals record, Lost in Alphaville. The new record includes collaborations with Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, Ryen Slegr of Ozma, and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys.
Listen to this episode! You’ll discover the answers to all these questions: Which Hollywood film director did Matt nearly get to make a video for The Rentals? How would Matt compare The Rentals with his old band Weezer? Which public figure would Matt want to work with–but he’s too scared to send the email? Which Matt Sharp record does one of Matt‘s friends use to get his kids to sleep? Press play.

It was so great to spend some time with someone who has been a part of so much indie rock history. Matt Sharp and I chatted for so long that I couldn’t fit everything into my typical episode length, so I’ve released a radio edit and an extended cut of our conversation. In the extended cut, I ask Matt what his favorite Weezer song is and why and I find out who he started The Rentals project for!
Jackyl tore up the scene just as hair metal died and grunge was ascending. Frontman Jesse James Dupree‘s claim to fame is adding a chainsaw as an instrument to Jackyl‘s set. (And, yes, Jesse has a guitar tech AND a chainsaw tech waiting backstage.)
Jackyl are back with a new record, they are not focusing on using the chainsaw in the new material, but they are still all about straight-up old-school party rock. Listen as I unearth a dark secret from Jesse’s past!
Jackyl “Lumberjack” The introduction of the chainsaw.
Jackyl “My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine’s Ass” Have you ever been to a lame scenster party? I have always wanted to see Jesse James Dupree crash the party–chainsawing thru a wall–with this song.

Not only is Winnipeg’s favorite son, Chris Jericho a WWE superstar, but he also has written a book, starred in film and tv–oh yeah, and he has his own band, Fozzy. He teamed up with industry stalwart Rich Ward, who was a founder of rap-metal pioneers Stuck Mojo. I asked Rich why he thinks the genre doesn’t get a lot of respect and he had some surprising things to say about metal-rap–and Winnipeg’s own Chris Jericho.
