the interview show: Eamon McGrath

Spending time with a guy like Eamon McGrath is a bit of a mindfuck.

This kid is only 22, but has put out that many records already. He has toured the coutnry countless times and he has the colorful party-binge stories you would expect from a 50-year-old roadie going thru AA’s 12-Steps.

Eamon’s record Peacemaker is his attempt to make amends for his past mistakes and he was amazingly candid about the life of an up-and-coming Candian indie singer songwriter during our chat.

Eamon McGrath “Wrecking Ball”

Eamon McGrath “Heaven Run Me Down”

Eamon will be in town Wednesday June 29th at the Zoo Zhop on Main. See you there!

OH NO! YOKO! Pau Pau pt 2

We effed up and labelled Oh No Yoko’s new song incorrectly. argh.  It was late (4am). I was last minute packing / leaving for Calgary / Sled Island.  SORRY.

Here is a brand new song from Pau Pau, GO ALIEN (not Alien Womb, although that does have a nice ring to it) + an interview with the gents.  Purchase / listen to Pau Pau here.

Oh No! Yoko – Go Alien

1)what do fans need to know about oh no yoko?

That we are touring this summer with Teen Daze to Edmonton and back starting July 1st (at the Cobalt)!

2) what inspired the name?
Liam was watching a documentary on John Lennon and she came up. Basically nothing.

3) yoko ono is a controversial figure in muisc history because she broke up a brotherhood. what kind of woman would it take to cause you guys to fight with each other?
We all had a crush on our friend’s mother when we were ten. We all slept in her suede bed. None of us ended up with her. Maybe her, she could do the trick.

3) how did you come together?
We met in kindergarden and showed each other our butt holes.

4) you guys are from Abby and do a lot of gigs in Vancouver. that can be quite a ride. what do you do to pass the time when you drive together?
We have like 3 mix cds that we made years ago and we just cycle between those. They consist of Don Henley and Punk Rock 101.

5) you guys have played with a lot of other local bands. which older band member from the scene do you admire and why?
You Say Party come from our town and we got to play a show with them before they split and now thankfully we are good friends with Stephen and Becky and they give great advice.

the interview show: Mohawk Lodge

Tracking down Ryder (centre below) from Mohawk Lodge is no easy task. The guy is constantly touring, recording, or doing work for his label White Whale Records.

The first time I caught him, he was in the bathroom. (And no he was not taking a dump, he was recording in there.) The second time, he was about to get on stage in Montreal. Third time is always a charm. This time, I caught him on his bike, heading to meet White Whale Records artist Eamon McGrath in Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park.

The story behind Mohawk Lodge‘s record Crimes is one that stirs the mind. The album tells the tale of how Ryder found his girlfriend in bed with a (now ex-)band member.

the interview show with Mohawk Lodge

Mohawk Lodge “A Crime of Passion” This tracks opens the record and is my favorite.

Mohawk Lodge “Wrong Side of the Bars” This song is about the night Ryder spent in jail after finding his girlfriend in bed with a bandmate.

Next week, we have Ryder‘s protege Eamon McGrath!

the interview show: Spaceship For Sale!

This week, we go from crazy to insane! Not only do I have industry expert Justin on the show to talk about his new blog, Spaceship For Sale, but I decide to test his knowledge of the industry by getting three local bands to ask him questions!

So this week, we’ve also got Tristan from DBL Dragon, Rob from Eeek! and Kyle from Vinyl Theory.

Enjoy the chaos. :)

the interview show with Spaceship For Sale

Mother Mother “The Stand” Justin’s favorite song right now. For me, it’s great to see this Quadra Island group put out a really awesome track.

DBL Dragon “Holiday” Tristan tells me this song is about “getting it on,” which he tells me is “the best!” I agree.

Eeek! “Lake Soux” This unreleased gem is about Rob spending a great day with his loved ones.

Vinyl Theory “Ghana” White Rock’s favorite prog rockers are looking for a singer. Here is one of their songs… all it needs is a great voice!

the interview show: Leif Vollebekk

When I walked up to the Biltmore to interview Leif Vollebekk, I found him closing the van and introduced myself. Turns out I was actually talking to Rolf from Acorn (the band Leif was on tour with). Leif and Rolf look uncannily alike and could easily be confused for siblings. So I guess it is luck the Acorn chose Leif to go on tour with them. Leif later told me that he was manning the merch table in Seattle and this drunk fan made the same mistake. He sold her an Acorn CD, told her that “Acorn loved her” and did everything short of signing the CD.

A lot of people think Leif sounds like Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley and it is easy to see why. I don’t think he compares to those heavy weights yet, but he is starting in a great place and he is a really sweet guy too.

the interview show with Leif Vollebekk

Leif Vollebekk “Don’t Go to Klaksvik” He is begging his girl not to go to a remote Icelandic town.

Leif Vollebekk “Northernmost Eva Maria”

the interview show: BranVan 3000

If you were listening to music in the 90s, you will not doubt remember the track “Drinking In LA.” It was one of those songs that was everywhere.

You may not remember the song is by a group of Montrealers called BranVan 3000. Back in the 1997, “Drinking In LA” exploded and suddenly a bunch of friends who had been calling the project an “electronic music collective” were suddenly touring the world and poised to become one of those cross-genre supergroups.

This tsunami of success continued. BV3 got signed to the Beastie Boys‘ prestigious record label and convinced R&B Legend Curtis Mayfield to sing on their second record’s lead single “Astounded.”

Then things turned quickly. The Beastie‘s label imploded, leaving Bran Van 3000 high and dry. “Astounded” turned out to be Mayfield’s final song. And the group seemed to disappear forever.

Good news! The crew is back with a new record The Garden. This week, I talk with BV3 headmaster James DiSalvio about everything from having one of “those songs” and riding that crazy wave of success to getting the old crew back together again and recapturing the magic.

the interview show with BranVan 3000

BranVan 3000 “Oui Got Now” A track from the new album that basically sums up what BV3 are about.

BranVan 3000 “Drinking In LA” The song that changed it all.

BranVan 3000 “Couch Surfing” Another track of their first album.
