TRIPOWEEN Preview with Cyril Hahn

I’ve been thinking about first times a lot lately. The first I listened to Ja Rule and Ashanti was in sixth grade and I’ve been a dedicated Murder Inc. associate ever since. The first time someone told me Maury Povich was only 80% authentic, I questioned my existence as a human being. The first time I made out to the luscious sounds of Cyril Hahn was this summer, in the back of a 1996 honda civic, with a dude who still wears his high school rugby sweater.

You may not be a fan of international rap sensation Ja Rule or the tragic DNA storylines brought forth by the magnificent Maury Povich, but if you’re not already you with Cyril Hahn, you need to be.

Vancouver-based producer Cyril Hahn is just your average Art History major, who makes beautiful bedroom beats in his spare time. Born and raised in Switzerland, Hahn became an overnight Internet commodity after his “Say My Name” remix dropped on Winnie this summer. Since then, he’s climbed to number one on Hype Machine, remixed junior Knowles, been played in night clubs around the world, received several spins on BBC Radio 1, and can now call Diplo a fan. With all this success, you can’t help but wonder where Hahn will be come Christmas time.
UZ X R. Kelly – I’m a Flirt Trap (Cyril Hahn Mash Up)
Mariah Carey- Touch My Body (Cyril Hahn remix)
Destiny’s Child – Say My Name (Cyril Hahn Remix)
For now Hahn is staying in Vancouver where he’ll be playing with Teen Witch, Falcons and Boja at Fortune Sound Club’s TRIPOWEEN October 31st. A few tickets are still available and can be purchased online or at Highlife, DIPT and Red Cat Records.
Do you have a favorite sound or noise?
I love white noise and field recordings. It’s something I always include in my songs.
Best make out song?
Oh man, too many. at the moment J. Holiday – Bed.
Favorite R/B song from the 1990’s?
That’s a tough one too but on the top of my head…R. Kelly – Bump n Grind

Were you surprised by the instant success of your “Say My Name” remix?
Definitely. It was only the 2nd or 3rd electronic song I ever wrote. It was just a way to experiment and to learn the software/techniques.
7. If one song could represent your childhood, what would it be and why?
Probably the Knight Rider theme song. I used to be obsessed with that show when I was little.
8. Do you see yourself finishing your degree at UBC or do you want to take some time off to concentrate on just music?
I’ll try and balance both at the same time. I know if I take time off school now I’d probably not finish my degree ever so I’d rather just get it out of the way now.
Name one recent release that you’re dying to remix:
I’d love to remix something off the new Tamaryn album, especially “Heavenly Bodies”.
Teaser: What are you going as for TRIPOWEEN?
Well I was gonna go as Karl Marx but I went Halloween shopping yesterday and the beard/wig I got is way too long. I sort of look more like Moses now…
And the biggest question of them all, Beyonce or Solange?
I’m gonna have to go with Solange. She works with more interesting producers and goes for the less obvious.

Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems
with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up
losing many months of hard work due to no backup.
Do you have any solutions to stop hackers?
