Estaban’s Picks – October 2012

New music is something I cultivate and collect on a regular basis. Whether it’s from the multitude of blogs I follow, or it’s posted by one of the many music nerd friends I keep up with on the internet. So naturally, people come to with me asking for new stuff.
I’ve decided to make this easier for everyone and just do a monthly post of all the tunes that have stood out for me in the span of 30 days. Hope you find something that hits you in that good spot.
Cayucas – Cayucos
I apologize if I’m touching a sore spot for the Vancouverites still mourning the end of summer. I feel your pain, but this song gives me some better flashbacks of the warm weather. There’s not a lot out there about this band yet, other then this video, they’re signed to Secretly Canadian, and it’s named after a very small surf town in California.
Divine Fits – Would That Not Be Nice
The initial shock of Handsome Furs breaking up was slightly calmed when the news broke that Furs’ (See also: Wolf Parade) Dan Boeckner would be releasing an album with warped indie-rock powerhouse Britt Daniel of Spoon. The result is Divine FIts.
Sky Ferreira – Everything is Embarassing

I’m going to purposely not link the music video because, if anything, it damaged my love of this song. I’m going to let you do that at your own risk. Most of Sky’s image rubs me the wrong way, this song is however breathtaking. Sky has a pretty scattered collection of songs vamping several genres. This single is hopefully the end of her identity crisis.

Local Pick:
Fine Times – Strays

Here is a welcome contribution to the Vancouver indie rock scene. Strays is a thumping, feel-good rock tune loaded with soothing synth fuzz. The vocals are anthemic but clever and they have a vibe reminiscent of Nicholas Thorburn from Islands and The Unicorns.
Fine Times is playing November 8th at The Zoo Shop with Gang Signs and Noble Oak. You should probably go.
