REVIEW: Olio Opening Party – The Floss Show

Oh shit! And now we’re off.
Last night was the opening night party/group hotbox/general shit show for the 4th annual Olio Festival. Evidently pulling people out on a Wednesday night is not an issue at all, as the place was packed, and sold out.
This was my first foray to Celebrities, so I can’t compare it to their usual Wednesday night, but the place was a zoo. Like, literally a zoo, cause we were laughing at people with animal-toque-scarf-thingys on their heads. But, for real, I was impressed with the volume/rowdiness of the crowd for a Wednesday night. People got there early, and we’re greeted by local kingpin/DJ/Olio mastermind MY!GAY!HUSBAND!. He got things prepped for Chicago’s Flosstradamus. Donned in matching Adidas hats and semi-logo exclamation mark hoodies, J2K and Autobot brought the jams. Leading your set with a Juicy J track is an Aziz Ansari approved move. Pretty much every DJ should open with ‘Bands A Make Her Dance‘. The mix was a combination of tracks off their Total Recall and Jubilation EPs, singles/remixes like ‘Original Don’ and ‘From The Back’, hip-hop of the day monster tracks(including 2 tracks off Cruel Summer), and a pretty hilarious/better than it sounds smashing of ‘Rollup’ and Darude’s ‘Sandstorm’. Dudes brought energy through the whole set. The crowd was hyped through everything. There was a pretty funny/subtle moment about 15 mins into their set when Autobot leaned over towards the curiously-on-the-stage production light dude, and clearly requested more strobe lights be used. He was agreeable to this request and stepped up his strobe light game immediately.
Things then jumped to Dillon Francis who made his return to Vancouver, after playing here earlier this year. It was a different tempo than the Chicago trap-duo. Specifically it was straight 140 BPM house tracks, with 90 seconds between dubstep breakdowns. These seemed to be crowd pleasers and kept the party atmosphere going.
All told, it was an awesome start to what’s going to be a rad 5 days. Make sure to follow @oliofestival on Twitter, and hit up oliofestival.com for lineups/schedules/up to date info on everything going on.
