PREVIEW: Action Bronson @ Fortune
Action Bronson doesn’t sound like a lot of rappers. He does sound like one, but we won’t get into that. He doesn’t look like a lot of other rappers either. Though Rick Ross sized, he owns the white guy, heavily tattooed, thick red beard, and basketball shorts look.
But actually, none of that matters. What matters is the words. And Bronsolini puts ‘em together like no one else around. If every line wasn’t so goddamn clever, you’d think it was all freestyled. There’s a free flowing way that he puts everything over, making Bronson feel like one of the most effortless rhymers around. On March’s mixtape Blue Chips(a nominee for best album art of the year), all his verses play out like ingenious non sequiturs on New York, pro wrestling, and most notably, food. But for real, he raps about food A LOT. The first verse off Nordic Wind comes in at 9 food references by my count. Hell, there might even be more, dude used to be a gourmet chef, so there’s likely things going over my head.
From what I heard from people at SXSW this year, Action Bronson shows are high energy affairs, with the wordplay in between songs as fun as the ones with beats behind them.
