The Airplane Boys

I have a confession to make and I’m really not proud of it. I follow emo girls on Tumblr for the sole purpose of mocking their boy crazy binge rants. Why am I telling you this? Well it seems that my despicable antics may have finally paid off. Let me explain.
Late this afternoon a YouTube video with the caption “Super Cute :)” showed up on my newsfeed. The video opened with two indie couples partaking in urban activities while a digitally inspired beat played in the background. Just as I was about to close the window, a dude in a Levi’s denim jacket started spitting something futuristic. To my surprise, this was actually the official music video for a track entitled “Gold Ribbons” by the Airplane Boys, a Canadian duo from T.O.
Shortly after this humbling experience, I downloaded their mixtape “Where’ve You Been” and quickly realized that I wasn’t the only one intrigued by this electro R&B dream team. The Airplane Boys, which consists of Beck Motley and Bon Voyag, have worked with Illangelo, one of the Weeknd’s producers, and toured with Mac Miller, J.Cole, Snoop Dogg, and the list goes on. With their first release you’ll see a sampling of the Arcade Fire and lyrics that rival Frank Ocean’s with their tortured quirkiness.

The Airplane Boys – Born to Be
Their follow up mixtape “Alignment” is set to drop on February 16, with two singles (“New Blood” and “Dictate”) already available for download. These tracks are sure to put you in a dopeness induced coma, as they somehow blend together electronic, urban, and indie pop, without sounding like T-Pain. Yet, what stand’s out the most is Motely and Voyag’s attention to lyrical detail. The cultural references are a plenty and they offer a social commentary that is both incredibly refreshing and disturbingly accurate.
You definitely want to give these guys a listen because next year they’ll be all over the mainstream.
