Emily In Toronto

Words by Emily

This year, I decided to move to Toronto for 8 months and during my time there I did a lot of what I do best, drink and go to shows. From NXNE, to small venues and loft parties I saw a lot of bands, most of which I still can remember. I compiled this list of what I enjoyed and what stood out to me the most. In my opinion, Toronto’s music scene does have a bit of a darker edge than Vancouver’s, which is something that I enjoy and will miss. Along with all the rap, the ability to smoke on patios and the general prevalence of cider.

Mausoleum

I saw Mausoleum most recently at their tape release at the Academy of Sciences loft a few weeks ago. Their new wave sound worked well for the small space. They are a bit early Cure which I like.

U.S. Girls

U.S. Girls played last week at the Garrison where I managed to see most of her set. Her clear vocals created a haunting ambiance in the bar and the audience seemed to stand frozen as she sang.

Rattail
My first exposure to Rattail was in Vancouver when they did a cross country tour when I was working at Goody. Since then, I have seen them a few more recent times and to me, each show is magic. Jasmyn’s distinct, and sometimes growling voice lends an edge to every song. Their new LP is coming out in the new year and from what I have heard, their sound seems to have taken a new direction. My only complaint is that I wish they would play Green Guitar more.

Rituals

Rituals-Life Saver from adam seward on Vimeo.

Rituals has a familiar, comforting gothic lo-fi sound that is ever so prevalent in music but not unwelcome. I went to their EP release and another show a few months ago and have been listening to it regularly ever since then.

Tropics
Every time I see Tropics, I am reminded of how good a duo can be. The drummer stands out on her own as someone to watch with her high energy level and frantic beat.

Little Girls

I first saw Little Girls at the Balmoral a few years ago and they have only improved since then. They released their LP Cults this year and I think it is their best work to date. Second only to their cover of Beach House’s 10 Mile Stereo.

    Hi Emily,
    Nice post!
I was wondering if you could tell me where the first image (with the Toronto districts) is from, or who is the artist? I would like to see the full image.
    It’s a really great piece.

    Hi Emily,
I would like to know the same thing as Mark: Who is the artist of the Toronto-in-words-map and where can I get this?
    Thanks!
    Niki
