French House? Ghibli

Ghibli aka Thomas Michael is an emerging artist from Edmonton.
I first heard about him through the Oh No! Yoko guys (He remixed their track, Go Alien) and have since been very impressed by his music.
Being someone born in the 80′s that grew up on French House / The French Touch it’s always amazing to see younger artist make something fresh and new that was clearly influenced by music that may of come out when they were 8 years old.
Expect big things from this guy. He was also recently featured on Teen Daze’s latest Cultus Vibes: Together compilation with some other great artists / Teen Daze pals.
This track is a Winnie exclusive and is just in time for champagne popping New Years celebrations.

And Then They Showed Us Why They Own the Throne

After rewriting this review several times due to a blistering next day hangover, my overall opinion of last night’s performance of Watch the Throne, featuring none other than Jay-Z and Kanye West, became very clear. Even through the haze of chronic, the adolescent boys screaming profanities, and the awkward couple attempting to dry hump beside me, the two kings of hip-hop blatantly demonstrated to me, and a sold out Rogers Arena, why they’re currently at the top of their game.
As Kayne West stood atop of a gigantic cubic structure mid audience, wearing a leather couture skirt, I was quickly transported into the world of Roc-A-Fella. Yes, I stood in line for 30 minutes to pay 8.00 dollars for a room temperate Bud Light, and of course the concert didn’t start on time and presented no opening act, but as soon as the vocals for “HAM” came on, all but was forgotten.
To my surprise, the two biggest names in hip-hop brilliantly mixed songs from “Watch the Throne” with their own hit singles from the past and present. You can only imagine the excitement that ensued when HOVA started spitting fan favourites “99 Problems” and “Empire State of Mind”. Kayne West initiated the same excitement when he reminded us why we love him, douche bag antics and all, when he asked the audience to throw their diamonds up during “All of the Lights”. However, it should also be noted that the crowd went equally as cray for “Who Gon Stop Me”, “Otis” and “Niggas in Paris”. Now that I think about it, the only time I sat down during the two-hour plus concert, was while waiting for the encore to begin, which included “Encore”, “Made in America”, and “Why I Love You”.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – Made in America
All in all, the dynamic duo of HOVA and Yeezy did not disappoint. And even though a very pregnant Beyonce did not make an appearance on “Lift Off”, even though she was spotted in the city, the concert made me appreciate true artistic talent.

the interview show: Tyrow James

Tyrow James is a fellow Surrey boy, so when he emailed me about his new record The Brass Knuckles Effect, I knew I had to have him on the show. Tyrow likes to make tracks that are a dangerous mix of Beastie Boys and Dayglo Abortions. He tells me The Brass Knuckles Effect is a break up record and a document of the last hellish year of his life.
No matter what you think about rap rock or hip hop break up records, Tyrow James is a local character worth checking out.
Warning: This show is not for the faint of heart. :) It is a hip hop interview after all.

Here is a link to his video for “Vanarchy” a track inspired by the Vancouver Riots.

Also, Tyrow is having a CD release party this week! Friday, December 23 at 9:00pm at Olympia Pizza & Restaurant in Surrey.
We are done for the year, so the interview show will be back before you know it with new shows. In the meantime we shall leave you with our favorites. Next week, my personal fav of the year… Skrillex!
