Just Announced: “Tribe of Zebras” (L.A)

Winnie Cooper is partnering for the first time with the mysterious and anonymous ladies of Tales from a Bar Stool, to bring you L.A’s Tribe of Zebras.
Comprised of Amika Akaya and Austin Wedvick, these L.A producers/Dj’s have a coveted spot at Teddy’s and the Hollywood W Hotel, where they regularly spin for the celebrity gong show of young Hollywood. The Tribe plays original music and their own remixes of songs from Local Natives to Radiohead.
The Tribe of Zebras are getting blog love as “an awesome deviation from the norm” and described as “a two man army bent on world motivation…they’ll do it by partying your ass off.”

The Tales website announces ”you never know who’s going to appear in the crowd at a Tribe of Zebras show.” Which is pretty exciting, because I’m really hoping for Kevin Costner, preferably in his Waterworld wardrobe, but I think I may be alone in that.
“Tales from a Bar Stool” are self described as “Sassy true stories told by SA & WT, two champagne drinking, high heel wearing, free spirited single girls from the perch of a bar stool.”
I usually scoff and make “ya right” faces at Cosmo and other “lady mags” in the supermarket line-up, then ninja grab one and hide it under my groceries. But I can vouch that these ladies, although occupying a “cosmo-esque” genre, are talented writers and their “tales” are enthralling, and not in the “I really need to know what 101 things I need to do in bed with a sandwich and a black light to make my man happy” kind of way.
Also, dudes, take note, the “Tales from a Barstool” advice is not only female-centric, they write about their social interactions and deliver a verdict on what lessons they learned from the experience. Usually when I go to restaurants I have my head down and remain focused on my spin dip, but these ladies get table-crashed by the New Kids on the Block and learn life lessons while doing it.
Tales from a Bar Stool are encouraging their readers and Tribe of Zebra’s fans to come out to the Vancouver show and “create your own tale”…..Which I am taking as a personal challenge as the Electric owl is the perfect venue for non-spinich dip related evenings. The Owl’s brand new expansive modern space has brick walls, polished concrete floors, intimate booths, a huge dancefloor, two bars and a full kitchen serving “japanese style snacks prepared by a Vietnamese chef in an izakaya-inspired room.”

YVR – Walter Tv

Walter Tv are one of our favorite local bro bands.
They are from White Rock, which is this bizarre California-esque Vancouver suburb beach town close to the boarder and neighbouring Surrey where car theft is a highly popular activity.
It’s somewhat of a musical hotbed. From my research I think it has something to do with the music program at Earl Marriot Secondary (I learnt “EMS” has the nickname of standing for “Early Marijuana Smoking”) but I don’t know shit and they might not even be from White Rock.
I do know there music sounds perfect for dropping into a wave, snaking “the bowl” or thrashing your hair around with 80 of your closest smelly friends at the front of the stage.
Here’s a video from one of our and Walter’s first shows back when we were an authentic music blog / event host putting on DIY shows at Funky Winkerbeans, the biggest dive bar in the crackiest part of town. We would set up a PA and lights and play on the floor. It was magical. Somehow Local Natives came through as unknowns and blew the 75 people in attendance mind’s.
They later built and stage, hired a “sound guy” and made it more of a legit music venue then the “poor unfortunate and displaced” metal heads moved in and took it over.
Memz.
Were planning a tour down the West Coast with Walter. If you want to make new friends and can help put on a show hit us up.

Ost & Kjex

Check out this falsetto ditty by Ost & Kjex. Kind of has a bit of a Prince feel.
The Norwegian duo are from Oslo. Their album, Cajun Lunch has been out for about a year but is still somewhat “under le radar”.
