I CAME part 2
Epic Record Store Day (last Saturday, the 16th). Did u buy records? Got myself some Rational Youth and some Max Richter (weird combo I know). Oh, hello Winniecooper. Long time, no post.
Holy Wampire! Wampire @ Goody w/ Bear Mountain and Breakfast Mountain (no relation). We at Winniecooper waited so long for this. Since I CAME. Show was tight. Those Mountain bands really made me dance. Also happening down the street at the same time if you didn’t know was Boogie Monster rippin’ it up at a house show in Strathcona. Insane. OK, about today – 4/20 Fest @ Goody was mammoth. Pretty much almost all my/your favourite bands in Vancouver now. And the first band that played outside, Mourning Coup (Calgary/Montreal/Vancouver)…shiiit…if you like Grimes and Braids this might impress…Anyways, see you at the next Winnie/NMS show. Dreamboat (dancey dance time) Boogie Monster/Myths (they gonna destroy Goody).
Blueprints For Our Failed Revolution
Highly under the radar – and on the verge of global domination, Vancouver Chamber Pop band The Ruffled Feathers are throwing a Video Release party on May 11 at the Biltmore Cabaret. The video is turning out to be quite an undertaking: lo-budget, guerrilla style. Don’t miss out on the Release Party. Call Before You Dig
and The Ponderosas are playing too

Rusko / Doorly / Expendable Youth 4/17

Baring witness to Doorly’s set was the highlight of Sunday’s show at the Commodore. Doorly, who rolled sans shmancy laptop equipment, brought mid 90’s pop samples and a dirty-low tempo. He kept a healthy-sized crowd fumbling around the dance floor, despite the time creeping past midnight and the headliner yet to hit the stage.

Unfortunately, after the Doorly set ended, the throes of poopy-faces emerged and wondered where Rusko was.

Somewhere between midnight and 1 a.m., the people with Monday morning jobs went home to bed; Rusko played for the dissipated, die-hard crowd. For those who were oblivious to the clock, his usual pop-twerkings sparked some serious dance floor grind.

Rusko’s set provided what was expected: rising sirens peaking at breaking glass sound effects, with low, spastic bass-wobbles. His voice, which I wasn’t expecting to hear much of, occasionally shouted short ‘n’ sweet nothings over tracks. He apparently expected his audience to understand these mumbled sentences, as these outbursts were sometimes comically accompanied by a cheeky visage.

Late set times aside, I learned that even the Commodore, with its grandiose dimensions, will shaketh like the back of your high school friend’s subwoofed car— if you fill it with enough bass. Also, I realized that kids, who claim to hate the Granville Street Hustle, would brave that locus of the Weekend Warriors if it includes a bit of raunchy bass on the Sabbath. Lucky for them, Doorly was tight. Too bad (for them) Rusko hit the stage way past bedtime.

the interview show: raincity doubleshot

Every once and a while it is nice to discover the hidden gems in your own town. This week, I’ve found two, Blood Diamonds and Matty C.
No one seems to know anything about blog sensation Blood Diamonds. So I called him up to get to the bottom of things. There is some weird dude screaming “Mass Effect” in the background. As revenge, I asked Blood Diamonds what he is singing in the shower lately. He wanted to sound all indie cool by claiming he sings Cut Copy‘s latest, but that isn’t what he ended up singing.
Matty C is a local DJ veteran and has just put out a single “Action.” When I called Matty C, he was playing with his baby daughter on the couch. You can hear her cooing in the background as we chat. Sweet shoegaze disco tracks and babies. This show never disappoints!
