WinnieCooper x SXSW

Back in Vancouver for a few days now. I have almost recovered. Slept for 12hours last night. Think i’m getting sick. I miss Austin, drinking all day, sleeping little and most of all “being shitty” which we decided the upside down peace sign is the international symbol for. Spread the good word.

Apologies to anyone who wasn’t at SXSW that I pissed off with my drunk tweets. Thank god, I had my camera and my twitter account or I would have no idea what happened.
Without further adoo-doo.

Day 1. PS I Love You (Kingston, ON) at Canada House.

Our cab driver didn’t know where to get any green but he did have MCat. That was a highlight of our trip. It was particularly nice for James Blake (UK).

DAY 4. Big Freedia (New Orleans) at the Mess With Texas tent. Right before everyone jumped on stage and some drunk guy pulled down his pants and showed his peen for a long ass time.

Had to jump the fence to get backstage and then sneak past security to hang off the scaffolding backstage for Odd Future (L.A.). Some girls started fighting next to me for position and were pulling each others hair. Diddy showed up and was hanging out backstage. I swear he looked at me hanging of the scaffolding like a douche with my camera and gave me a lil wink, like, “Never give up kid”. Awesome. Tried to follow him to find the Kanye West penthouse party but I swear he disappeared into thin air. Might of been a hologram.
Tyler The Creator – Sandwitches

Fave chill bro, Teen Daze (Vancouver) at Soho.

Vancouver peeps at an after party on the last night.

DAY 5. Last day. Hanging out in a field at a school killing time before flights home with the roommates. Party pain. Can you tell who went to bed the earliest / is the most responsible?
Stay tuned for the video footage. Just say no kids.

Get Up Offa That Thang …

After four days of non-stop dancing, eating an overload of tacos and pizza, sleeping a maximum of five hours a night and tweeting so much your thumbs are sore, it is best to wait a few days to reflect on your SXSW expedition. So … after some rest, our ears are done ringing and we are ready to reflect.

Mark your 2011 calendars to get up offa that thang and dance to these five artists listed below, they are a guaranteed good time.
SKRILLEX:
Sonny Moore may have once been known as the frontman for the emo-hardcoreish band From First To Last. But, lets set the record straight … Sonny Moore is now Skrillex. And he is certainly a new favorite to the electronic-beat bumping, dubstep DJ scene. Club-goers beware or better yet listen up, cause Skrillex is dropping La Roux remixes and original tracks like ‘Rock N Roll Take Me To The Mountain’, ‘Weekend’ & ‘Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites’. At SXSW he turned heads, instigated crowd surfing and knee grinding galore. Fun is an understatement when referring to the liveliness and rejuvenation a Skrillex show will deliver.

VOXHAUL BROADCAST:
This Orange County quartet has come a long way since they dropped their 2008 EP and you can hear their improvement and maturity in sound in their debut album “Timing Is Everything”. Sex, yes, the lead singer David Dennis is giving out innuendos with every stroke of the guitar and every yelp into the mic, it might be the lyrics, but it is certainly the raspy voice and hip thrusts. Drugs, well, the band will tell you themselves, their track ‘Cheetah’ couldn’t have happened without hallucinogen-tics. Rock, yeah that is right, Voxhaul has that covered. Voxhaul Broadcast took over SXSW this year dripping sweet sounds of rock n’ roll all around Austin and lucky for you they will be touring non-stop.
Voxhaul Broadcast ‘Loose Chains’

OH LAND:
Oh yes, she will be the quickest and sweetest Danish thing to pop in 2011. Oh Land will put your heart at ease, your feet on the dance floor and your dreams with-in arms reach. Oh Land’s gentle and cute linguistics sound similar to Nelly Furtado, but powerful like Florence and The Machine. Oh Land’s smooth and enchanting vocals are complimentary to India Arie. But her energetic stage presence is far from bashful, in fact she dominates colorfully like Karen O and Natasha Khan. She proved her skills playing something like ten shows at SXSW. Now she will win us over one step at a time with her unbelievable self-titled album. It sounds like she won’t stop until we get enough!

MOUNT KIMBIE:
If this UK based electronic duo went to the doctor they would probably leave with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, maybe even a prescription to Adderall, as they are all over the place in genre and style. It doesn’t take a lot of soul searching to find at least one simple pleasure in their many many sounds, but you might find yourself searching your soul as Mount Kimbie delivers you structural elements jazz, soul, funk and house. Their album Crooks and Lovers made many top 2010 year-end lists, but in 2011 Mount Kimbie will reap the benefits of dubstep and modern electronica saturating the mainstream. Don’t miss their live performance, as they will also be touring with the unbelievable Jamie Woon.

THE BELLE BRIGADE:
You know the saying “let the good times roll”? Well The Belle Brigade is bound to bring you good times with their tight and catchy, yet super comfortable sound, you can’t help but to just roll with it, roll with them that is. Barbara and Ethan Gruska demonstrated great passion and soul as they bounced their redheaded-heads during their upbeat, doo-wop, groovy performances at SXSW. And yes you should note, they are brother and sister, not boyfriend and girlfriend – which lends itself more to their adorableness. The Belle Brigade’s self-titled album will release on April 19th, until then catch up with them on tour, they are bringing a smile to one ‘Loser’ at a time.

That is all for now. Tell us who you loved at SXSW. Or try this … go out and see the bands mentioned above and come back and tell Winnie what you think.
Nardwuar vs Based God

it’s looking like the BEST thing at SXSW was Nardwuar.
