Submit 2 TEH MUSIC WASTES 2011

BANDS, COMEDIANS, LOCAL / OUT OF TOWN, SUBMIT! One of Winnie’s favorite cultural institutions / music holidays / festival, is approaching.
Though in its earliest days Music Waste served as Vancouver’s premier underground punk and indie showcase, the annual event has gone on to include a diverse array of genres, from experimental laptop electro to gutbucket country, while also expanding into the worlds of art and comedy.
Organizer Cameron Reed knows the long-running festival has gone through many changes over the years, but he believes the intent behind Music Waste is still to showcase artists outside the mainstream. An open call for bands for this year’s event, which runs June 1 to 4, has the promoter looking for groups that are “trying to expand the genre or do their own thing”. Basically, Reed told the Straight, he’s looking for “anyone with an interesting sound”.
If you haven’t already put your name in the proverbial hat, you might want to get cracking. Fest planners have been overwhelmed by the number of submissions they’ve received since the new year began. “Within the first 24 hours, we got 80 submissions,” Reed noted. “We’re up to maybe 125 now.” Musicians, artists, and comedians are encouraged to contact Music Waste by the submission deadline of April 15 at submissions@musicwaste.ca.

the interview show: Little Dragon

We’re back a week early to celebrate Little Dragon‘s 2011 tour.
I woke Little Dragon singer (and all-around indie goddess) Yukimi from a nap in her hotel room while she was on tour with Gorillaz. Even though she is sleepy, I get her to give me her best metal growl (cuz she is from Gothenberg, Sweden, a town known more for its metal than its chill electronic indie pop.)
I love these guys for two reasons. 1) No one knows who they are yet. They make great chill electronic tracks and everyone I have introduced to the band loves ‘em. And 2) You can’t stop these Swedes. They toured North America last year, themselves and with Gorillaz. And, first thing in 2011, the guys are storming North America again. Check out when they are coming to your town here.
Listen to our chat! Little Dragon on the interview show
Little Dragon “Feather” This song Yukimi wrote because she resented being told that women are not risk-takers.
Gorillaz (feat Little Dragon) “Empire Ants” You’ve got to wait a bit for Damon Albarn to finish before Yukimi and Fredrik can do their thing.
Little Dragon “Never Never” (SBTRKT remix) This is my favorite Little Dragon track remixed.
Little Dragon roll thru town tomorrow at Fortune Sound Club. See you there!

The Albertans
Today Winnie Cooper is super amped to announce the release of The Albertans’ first single “The Wake” from their upcoming album New Age on Ernest Jennings (home to Cuff The Duke, O’Death, Still Filyin’ and more!).
These crafty little kitties just moved back to Vancouver from Brooklyn to deliver their unique pop prophecies to an appreciative west coast audience. They killed it last month in Vancouver at the BeatRoute Magazine Christmas party and they’re about to do it again on January 14th at the Media Club alongside Minto and Henry & the Nightcrawlers.
