In Search Of…

I am in search of a new dance rock band after The Rapture are apparently done.
So, I set out to Venue last Friday night to check out UK dance-punk band The Foals. I was a bit worried for the band since Gogol Bordello was sold out across the street, it was an early show, and NMS had SuperCassettes. But our city’s UK expat contingent never disappoints and Vancouver has a sizable anglophile community of its own–and they all turned out to fill Venue for the show.
The Foals lead, Yannis, definitely knows how to draw focus with his own drums and acrobatics. By the end of the show he was climbing all over the stage and up the balcony.
It was infectious and despite the best efforts of Venue security, fans fought their way onstage to dance with the band. Yannis told the security to leave his flock alone and eventually they did.
Yannis did promise that the band would be back this spring, so all UK dance-punkers know to keep their calendars open. This was probably the last time to see them at such an intimate venue.
The sweetest moment of the night was the very end when one disoriented fan wished the dispersing crowd well with a “thanks for coming.” The band had long since left the stage and she now felt as much a part of the show as the band.
The only thing good about an early Friday night show is that after you are free to enjoy your night at NMS where you got to take in Vancouver’s ?next hype band? Supercassettes, along with Dreamboat and Alonzo.
