TEEN DREAM
A sold out crowd at the Rickshaw Theatre were treated to a warmly low lit stage decorated with streamers and shiny rotating disco shaped beach houses.
Vancouver has a growing fondness for the heavenly dream pop group Beach House and it’s reciprocated by the fact that guitarist Alex Scally announced to the crowd that the first time they played here was just down the street at Pat’s Pub. Interestingly, there’s a quote on a Metronews Ottawa article that lead singer Victoria Legwand called their Pat’s show “one of the best shows we’ve ever had” at the time.
What made this show one of best Vancouver has ever seen them is the release of their latest album “Teen Dream” on Sub Pop earlier this year which could be on a lot of music goer’s list for one of the top album of 2010. After a further listen, it’s pretty damn relaxingly good. I’ve heard a lot of “Devotion” and their self titled album on constant repeat and coupled with the fact that their shows at the Media Club and Richards on Richards the past few years have had lasting impacts - anything they played off “Teen Dream” was amazingly refreshing. While the old songs were great, they were just filler in comparison to the new songs played live.
In connecting with the crowd even more, Victoria acknowledged the balcony and from her view it was a like a baseball stadium declaring “Foul Ball!”. She also walked to the front of the stage and handed a lucky girl a bracelet of hers. They’ve almost sold out the rest of tour dates in North America til June so the best chance to see them is either Coachella if you’re down there or the Toronto Island Festival.
