The XX @ the Commodore
The mystique and aura surrounding the south London group the XX snuck up on me in the past year. I hate it sometimes when Pitchfork tells me what is good these days but if I’ve got the 100 best tracks of 2009 on my iTunes it’s kind of my fault. I can’t complain.
I was totally amped for this show since it was crazy impossible to see these guys down in Austin (SXSW 2010) although I did manage to sneak into a lawn party and heard them from a distance – shitty sound so I don’t count that. Also, it wasn’t their first time playing in Vancouver as they played back here in November 2009. Anyways, Nosaj Thing from LA opened. I know he played a show at the Fortune Sound club early this year and missed it. He played some decent freestyle mad beats and kicked it big time to start but he lost a little of my attention as he went on. He’s got a good remix of ‘Islands’ by the XX. He didn’t play it but maybe he should have for what was going to come up next.
Elin Kastlander and Joakim Benon make up the Swedish outfit known as JJ (Sincerely Yours, Secretly Canadian). If anyone knows me, I pretty much favour pop music that comes from Sweden over anything else. Beforehand, I wasn’t sure how exactly they fit into the XX bill. Elin Kastlander played her first song by herself with acoustic guitar. Right away I was impressed by her voice. Her bandmate Joakim Benon appeared on stage a few songs later and nonchalantly strummed a few bars on the guitar while lying down flat out on stage out of the spotlight. Thier songs didn’t have a consistent flow to them but I have say that the visuals screened behind her were entertaining and cued perfectly (deers roaming, soccer matches, beach scenes, ocean elephants and her smoking and singing).
The XX finally came on and performed behind a white curtain with a huge X beamed on it during the song ‘Intro’. The crowd went crazy when the curtain dropped exposing the XX with the lights down. The early part of their setlist was heavy with crowd favourites ‘Crystalised’ and ‘Islands’. I guess what isn’t a favourite. They finally introduced themselves and went into ‘VCR’ and “Do You Mind”. The rest of their set is pretty self explanatory – the sound was tight, their stage presence so low key but so good at the same time. They came back with an encore with in front of a star-lit backdrop behind a huge X mounted backstage. A second encore was expected but a brief XX DJ outro track looped out and left the crowd pretty satisfied with the return of the XX.
