Oh MTL

I’ve been slacking with my Pop Montreal update. In all honesty it got way to hard to keep up with while trying to keep up with the festival and shoot as much footage as I could. I also stuck with a handicapped macbook (the generation) where Apple decided to not include a firewire and I havn’t been able to load any of the glorious footage we shot. Not to fret it will come.
One of my fave bands we met were the Silly Kissers. We posted a song of by them and were contacted by GOBBLE GOBBLE of Alberta who sent these amazing tunes over! The first is a remix of Silly Kisser bff Sean Nicholas Savage (oh my).

VAMPIRE WEEKEND that is Free and New

Vampire Weekend released their debut album in 2008, aptly titled Vampire Weekend. I liked it. I don’t care. Many people claimed they were ripping off Paul Simon and calling it Preppy, Indie AfroPop. This is not music to feel tough to. This music makes you want to wear blazers and match your belt and shoes and smoke cigarettes out of holders and watch Wes Anderson movies and guffaw at zingers. Which are things I like to do, sometimes! Don’t Judge.
Vampire Weekend have a new album coming out early January 2010, Contra. But! What they’ve done is put a FREE NEW song on their website that you can go and download and decide if you still like them or if it was more of a summer fling.
GO GET IT!
Just Wait

This track doesn’t really get going until about a minute twenty… and the lead in is a total fake out. But it’s a nice balance I guess between harder, heavily filtered sounds and those softer synths and piano.

Ummmmmm don’t forget to add Winnie on Twitter! Unless of course you’re a spambot. Or a space vampire.
the interview show: B U R N S

Meet B U R N S. The first guy to get signed to Linus Loves’ own label after laptop-master Mylo. (Geez, remember him?)
B U R N S is a man with a plan. He is gonna release four EPs over 2009, showcasing his dancefloor chops. In the meantime, he has been remixing indie legends, like White Lies, Passion Pit and The Gossip–with more on the way.
After that in 2010, he is gonna drop a proper album with full-on pop aspirations.
Until then, you can catch him cleaning his skinny jeans at the local laudramat and slumming it on the interview show.

Here’s a voicemail I got a couple days ago. Have a listen:
Do you think I need new friends?
Pop Montreal Day 1

Hello from Montreal, here’s a recap of yesterday
Matt and Kim was sold out! Someone wasn’t fast enough on their media rsvping. Went down the street to check out The Montreal Nintendo Orchestra an experimental act that makes music with two Nintendo DS units and a wack of pedals. It was interesting but def no Matt and Kim. Made me feel like I had drank some of the magic koolaid, which I’m sure is the intention.

We then hit up Jay Reatard who I didn’t know much about. I was very impressed, just the right mix of metal, punk and pop. The venue, La Sala Rosa was pretty awesome, It didn’t look like a venue from the outside and there’s a Mexican restaurant that we had some pops at below it on the second floor. The kids were going nuts.

We then headed back to Matt and Kim and managed to walk in and catch the last half of their set! I had a hard time keeping my lens from fogging up, people were losing it and Matt & Kim were cute in their own genuine Matt and Kim way.

Ended up at a reggae night and managed to clear the dance floor. then went for pooh-teen. Awesome!
We interviewed the D’Urbervilles today a very very wicked Toronto band. I managed not to throw up or sweat too much as the hangover was in effect.
Fever Ray, tonight.

PS, how rad are these guys and this Joy Division inspired video. Very stoked to see them tomorrow!
