I was an O.G. Teenage Emo

Sunny Day Real Estate have just re-released thier debut album “Diary”.  To me they are one of the godfathers of emo before it became Jimmy Eat World / post 00′, then further deteriorated into My Chemical Romance and Angels and (H)Airw(e)aves.  I had forgotten how good Diary is, it has aged well.

Sunny day Real Estate’s original lineup have reuinted and they are heading off on tour.  they are here in Van-schmitten September 17th.  Check their website for more dates.

Sunny Day real Estate – In Circles (94)

While were on the topic of emo…. A lot of my emo cds aren’t playing anymore, I was a napster whiz kid and a lot of them were burnt discs as hard drives were only 6gb back then so you had to burn everything to disc to free up space. Ive been doing a lil emo revisiting.

I remember trying to get in to see The Promise Ring at the Starfish Room and being super wasted as only an 18 year can be. I showed the bouncer my library card as ID and was told to never come back.  I went and passed out in my friends car, he had fake id and got in.  super bummer. never got to see them play.

The Promise Ring – Why Did We Ever Meet (97)

This was my friday song

The Get Up Kids – Holiday (99)

the acoustic version of this is even more emo.

The Ataris – San Dimas High School Football Rules (99)

I just posted some David Bazan, this is his first group. It was released on Jade Tree Records which was like the ultimate Emo / awesome label.

Pedro The Lion – Of Minor Prophets and their Prostitute Wives (98)

Is this emo? You can’t really mention emo with out talking about old school weezer IMHO.  This is a blue album b-side that Rivers wrote about two girls that ended up running the Weezer fan club through their early interest in the band.  They were the first members of the club.  They died tragically in a car crash in 97′ and are said to be one of the reasons for the downtime post pinkerton.

Weezer – Mykel and Carli (94)

Some Canadian emo.

I love how they look so sad on this cover.  Come on cheer up, Kurt did it to himself.  It will all be ok, just look forward to the rave era.  Happy pills, kids.

Sloan – Coax Me (94)

Is this emo? Does it have to have more of a punk element to be emo? Feel free to dispute any of these claims or suggests others I missed.

Hayden – As bad as they seem (95)

Hayden – Summer (95)

Ok I’ll leave it on this as im getting way to weepy and feel like cutting myself.

American Football – I’ll See You When We’re Both Not So Emotional (99)

wow flashback. i remember sunny day real estate sounding more epic. must’ve been the hormones.

i once saw sloan get pelted off the stage with snowballs at an outdoor concert in whistler. for wimpy dudes they’ve got a lot of haters.

hayden still sounds rad and lazy.

  5. By haha, dashboard. wait, really? sure you're joking...phew. on Sep 4, 2009 | Reply

yes, yes, i was 16 once. i remember the only good ones being sdre, mineral, & cap ‘n’ jazz.
    hayden’s great, but not emo.
pedro the lion is christian rock.
& all that other stuff is embarassing.
sad, but if we’re honest with ourselves here…

    Hey,

My name is Shaw. Drop me a line and I’ll send you the Moss Icon discography, if you’d like. I have some other stuff like that.

Here’s a list of things to get back into: Mineral, Texas Is The Reason, Commander Venus, Capn Jazz, American Analog Set, early Modest Mouse, Rites of Spring.

… still though. SDRE was amazing. Hugely influential and underrated in the shadow of Nirvana. I’ll take Diary over any grunge record, any day of the week.

I also make music. You can get my album at http://www.swordfishrecords.com/pwna.zip
