Down The Line

With summer coming to an end, it’s almost time to start listening to music that goes well with dark afternoons, bowls of soup, big warm sweaters, and giant furry blankets.
My autumn playlist is pretty much all Fleetwood Mac, but Gerry Rafferty can be thrown in there too.
Best known for the amazing ‘Baker Street’ song, Gerry Rafferty was also a member of Stealers Wheel.
Here’s my personal favourite off the City To City LP.
Gerry Rafferty – Right Down The Line

I have been enjoying the Foo Fighter’s cover of Rafferty’s Baker Street. It’s the Foo’s usual combination of loudly atmospheric grunge-cum-hard rock guitars with Dave Grohl’s edgy melodic crooning: somewhere between Learn to Fly and Pretender (my two other favourites.) Rafferty’s version is timeless and superb and there are few riffs in the history of the genre that stand out like the saxaphone motif therein. It contains one of my favourite guitar solos too: simple but powerful.
I have an ulterior motive in all of this contextual comment. Where did you find the photo of the gorgeous powerful painted warrior-woman with the BFG? I don’t go in for guns much, but that’s a terrific pic. “Okay – I’ll put down the drumstick – Whatever you say lady” :)
