Archive for June, 2009:
Cabbie

This track was never released officially. As much as Souls of Mischief dominated the rap landscape in the 90s, they could never get the sample cleared for this song.
Eventually the track was put out on a white label B-side just a few years ago, so it’s a bit of a rarity.
You’ll recognize the sample, especially if you’re an early 80s TV buff or just a fan of Latka.
The lyrics tell an interesting little story and it ties it all together. I think if this track got a proper release, it would easily be considered a classic along with 93 ‘Til Infinity.

Some new music.
We interviewed Au Revoir Simone for Winnie-tv yesturday. First off they are the nicest band ever in the history of bands. Second, they are also the cutest band ever. Third thing, they are awesome and on tour right now heading down to U-tah. myspace for more…
Au Revoir Simone – Take Me As I Am
Im a sucker for everything vampy wkend related. This is a side project with VW keyboard player whos name i keep on having to look up and Ra Ra Riots Wes Miles. Their new album “LP” is pretty awesome in an experimental yet extremely poppy gem kind of way.
Winnie fave and Toronto native, Don Cash is re releasing his album Freshy Fresh, giving it the remastering treatment. Here’s one of the newly polished tracks from it.
This is a classic. Learn all the words and sing along with your friends in the club.
Winnie pal Solly just sent us his remix of INOJ’s my boo. A little cheesy yes, but so is my life
This Is Yer Brain On Drugs

Ever find some bands have really hard to google names?
Basketball is one such band. They created quite a stir in Vancouver before leaving us for Barcelona last fall.
If your life is what flashes before you, right before you die, Basketball just might be the musical equivalent of this. I’m not sure if I’ve heard music with a more diverse use of samples. It’s as if they’ve traveled the world with a tiny tape recorder capturing strange encounters, then smashed it all up forcibly in a large mixing bowl and made cous-cous.
They return to Vancouver later this summer to serve up more of their ethnic delights. Check their space for tour dates for their current European romp.

Au Revoir Simone

Au Revoir Simone is a Winnie Cooper favourite.
Basically if you don’t like them, then you just might not have any emotions and you should get that checked out. Maybe there’s like an ointment for that.
The female trio from New York make their stop in Vancouver tonight courtesy of SWAK, so put on your best outfit and go see them!
Au Revoir Simone – Sad Song (RAC Mix)
Annnnnnd just in case you were wondering… this will explain it:
This Is England

I watched This Is England recently.
I thought it was great. Set in 1983, the styling and wardrobe were really well done. Even better is the soundtrack.
