Harlem

110th street

From the 1972 movie Across 110th Street, this classic soul track from Bobby Womack is like its own short film.

The lyrics are written to create this vivid backdrop and to tell a story of struggle in a difficult New York era. The orchestra makes the tale even more cinematic.

They don’t make songs like this anymore (except for maybe R Kelly, but it’s still not the same…)

Apparently Bobby Womack will be singing lyrics on a forthcoming Gorillaz album so keep an eye out for that. Alburn has definitely got his head screwed on for my money.

I liked the way Tarantino used this track in “Jackie Brown”.
