Smooth
Our pal, Minna forwarded this. Danish group, Laid Back are best known for their seminal early 80’s dance track and coke jam, “White Horse”. This is one of their lesser known gems from 1990. The video was directed by fellow countryman Lars Von Trier. Check out their beautifully crafted website for more Laid Back.
French Pharrell? LOL!

I’ve seen DJ Mehdi do his thing a number of times. I gotta say, it’s always a good time. The dude always comes through with his best game and it’s quite the show that he puts on. Vancouver gets another chance to see the Ed Banger all star this week. I see you there, yes?
Markus Wormstorm

Together with front man and rapper Spoek, south african beat juggler, Markus Wormstom becomes the (now) household name Sweat X.
Now, I just got my hands on Markus solo project, and I noticed to my surprise that it has passed by relatively unnoticed, and that is a shame!
He handed it over to me this weekend and I instantly asked, -Is it share-able? (in the quest of the lost blog-post)
It was. Get Up! EP was released a couple of months ago, got some attention, but far from enough. On this track Markus features Spoek, so its pretty much all the ingredients you need to cook a Sweat soup, and offcourse it’s TASTY. Its a tad slower, and sounds as amazing to my ears as the presets of my first casio did back then (i belive it had a scratch pad too). Pure music joy.

Listen up for 15 year old Chi Chi who is featured on this track below. If she plays it right, that girl can go places.
And to be honest, I have no idea whats going on in this track. And i love it, backwards vioces, glich samples, bootybass, electro, rio funk I have no clue. He twist n turns the sound around n back again. There is a break in the middle and i think he might run the entire track backwards from there on, and he gets away with it! The only thing i know is that i wanna dance, read the t-shirt!

And while you are on the South African tripp, make sure to peep Playdoe also with Spoek from Sweat X. When I saw them live this summer Sick Sinus leaned over and whispered to me
- This is the future of hip-hop.
Dominant Over Everyone

If you do an interweb search for D.O.E. you’ll find information on alternative energy sources and conservation tips. But, D.O.E. is also a rapper from Queens best known for his short verse on Timbaland’s hugely successful “The Way I Are”. Formerly going by the name John Doe, D.O.E. is looking to release his Timbo produced debut solo effort in 2009.

iConcertCal

Never miss your favorite band passing through town again.
Iconcertcal is a free plugin for iTunes that tells you when bands in your library are playing shows in your city.
It appears promoters and artists are slowly getting up to speed on this fantastic thing.

The Born Ruffians

Toronto indie faves, “Born Ruffians” are coming to town October 10th, playing Richard’s. Their album, “Red, Yellow & Blue” which came out in May is up for the best album award by the Toronto XM station The Verge.
At their last Vancouver stint the band played a low key show last March at the Media club which was subsequently listed as one of the best shows of the last year in the current Georgia Straight “Best Of” issue.
If that’s not enough to convince you have a listen.
From their forthcoming EP, “Little Garcon” which features some new tracks and another remix by Four Tet. Coming out September 30th.

And now, a message from radiohead

To coincide with asking radio stations to think about playing “Reckoner” we are breaking up the tune into pieces for you to remix. After the insane response we got from the “Nude” remix stems and the site that was dedicated to your remixes…
Unique visitors: 6,193,776, Page Views: 29,090,134, Hits: 58,340,512, Bandwidth: 10.666 Terabytes, Number of mixes: 2,252, Number of votes: 461,090, Number of track listens: 1,745,304
…we thought it only fair to do the same with a tune that at least is in 4/4. You can get the stems (the different instruments/elements) from here
Sample, cut, take the sounds, whatever. Play it in a club. Or your room. Then if you want you can upload your finished mixes to http://www.radioheadremix.com and be judged by everyone else. You can create a widget allowing votes from your own site, Facebook or MySpace to be sent through too. To start things off we asked James Holden and Diplo to do their versions.
Oh, and by the way, if you weren’t lucky enough to get your hands on one of our recycled plastic bottle shirts at a show this summer, you’ll be glad to hear we’ve made some more and they are available at thew.a.s.t.e. shop here

New Strokes Side Project

Strokes drummer, Fab Moretti has started the side project, “Little Joy“. Named after a Los Angeles, Echo Park dive bar of the same name, the band consists of Moretti’s girlfriend Binki Shapiro and Brazillian singer guitarist Rodrigo Amarante (formerly of Los Hermanos) who all moved in to a house together in the area.
It sounds remarkably similar to a stripped down version of the Strokes which I have absolutely no complaints about.
An 11 track album is being released November 4th. Check out more Little Joy at their myspace.
