The Chromatics: Disco does a phoenix

Disco is making a big comeback. Labels like DFA and bands like Hercules & Love Affair seem to be getting all the hipster love for reviving the genre. Another label hard at work at bringing back italo-disco–with a distinctly modern favour–is Italians Do It Better. Two bands on the IDIB roster that deserve special attention are Glass Candy and The Chromatics.

I think a Pitchfork critic got it right (yeah, yeah… sometimes they do get it right) when he said that Italians Do It Better “lovingly re-imagines the style as retro-futurist noir– a sleek soundtrack to lives of moral ambiguity in post-urban shadows.”

Both bands are making really exciting music right now. Definitely get into them now before everyone else does. The Chromatics album “Night Drive” was on a lot of “2007 best of” lists and Glass Candy was one of 25 bands on NME’s “Bands Making America Cool Again” list.

Keep an eye on winniecooper.net for upcoming interviews with Glass Candy (on August 25th) and The Chromatics (September). We always give you the good shit.

Italo revival?!? Italo never died.. .

    it just multiplied..

    colours.

no seriously, Italo never died.. just ask the thousands of heads on youtube that post videotapes of their choice italo vinyl pumping on their record players.. that’s where you’ll find the best italo if you dig this.. no doubt..

heh heh heh lexie! this is your bailwick, eh?

    sure, you are right.

rap-metal is not technically dead either–I am sure I could find some bands still doing it on youtube too–but it doesn’t rule people’s minds like it did back in Limp Bizkit’s hey day.

and even three years ago, hipsters wouldn’t touch an italo-disco track. where now hercules & love affair is the hottest thing.

I love the cold post-urban feel that johnny jewel has been giving the genre. what do you think of the IDIB roster? namecheck some other italo-disco tracks/groups peeps should check out…?

    IDIB is king.. no sweat.

Ok.. i’ll do up a classic italo post; although, I get the feeling Margot’s got me beat in the Italo dep’t. see her GANG – KKK post.

If anyone has the time… what is the link again with spaceships and disco? I know that George Clinton always went touring with one and that this spaceship made him go bankrupt…

hmm.. maybe it’s the vocoders and the bleeps..

    - and lex… please do.. Italofans don’t come in large numbers (because we from another planet)
