Archive for August, 2008:
Shayne Ehman
Shayne just moved back to Vancouver and had a baby boy, Axl Owl Ehman. Go buy his drawings on Sept. 6 so he can keeping that baby bouncing! He also did the music on the Bangmaster Generals Warning project. Pretty wicked.
Winnie Mixtapes

I caught you a delicious bass. We have some mixes for you.
First up Chicago’s The Cool Kids, with a mixtape named perhaps to answer the, “is hip hop dead” question. The first track is the second track on the mixtape, which is straight up fire. They have a new single, “The Delivery Man” out now.
The Cool Kids - That’s Stupid The Mixtape (23min)
This one is for lovers of deep hypnotic crunchy techno beats. Montreal’s The Mole is playing Fabric in London next Saturday, September 6th.
The Mole - Live At Fabric (33min)
Tittsworth has recently released his first full length album, which has been three years in the making. Pitchfork has panned the album citing “too little, too late”. They argue that the Baltimore Club genre isn’t the freshest thing right now, which i’d agree with on a dj / music nerd, blog level.
I’d argue that the dance floor doesn’t lie.

Tittsworth - The McCain Mix - 2008 (56min)
90’s Friday

Looking good and feeling great in some nice acid wash jeans? Here are some 90’s jams to get you through the weekend.
Fetish night meets NIN meets Florida bass meets acid house or something like that.
Lords Of Acid - Spank my Booty
Im a huge Weezer nerd, it’s a soft spot I have. Did you know that the band went on hiatus after the commercial failure of Pinkerton in 1997?
Rivers went to school at Harvard but soon dropped out. During this time Cuomo started a side project called Homie which consited of Greg Brown member of Cake, Matt Sharp (formerly of Weezer, lead singer of The Rentals), Adam Orth of Shufflepuck and Yuval Gabay of Soul Coughing.
The group recorded an album worth of material, only finishing all of the drum tracks. The sole song to be released from the session is this song here which made it onto the, “Meet The Deedles” soundtrack.
We need more new hip house, maybe that’s a classification that Spank Rock could fall under? 118 BPM is where its at too. Bounce.
Alright this is for the straight up lovers, or the straight down or which ever way it swings. You know who you are.
Toni Braxton - You’re Making Me High
Hip Hop Is Dead?

A friend recently told me that Hip Hop is dead. When I disagreed and said, “what about groups like Spank Rock?” he claimed that they’re not hip hop, they’re “hipster jump off” or “hipster get up” a genre which I’d never heard of.
Is hip hop dead? Is there such a thing as “hipster get up” music? Are genres in general dying?
Busta Rhymes vs Justice - Get Down (TURBOSTATION Genesis Edit)
Agentlovelette - Touch The Screen (Busta Rhymes vs Ronnie Jones)
ELECTRONIC MALE

Bjork posted an interesting memo on her website calling out one journalist in particular for not properly giving her the writing credits on the 2001 album Vespertine. Instead the magazine journalist gave credit to Valgeir Sigur∂sson (a man).
She makes parallels to M.I.A.’s lashing of the media when Diplo was credited with being the mastermind behind Arular and Kala.
A lot of interesting debates have spawned (again) with the conversations centering around the misconceptions that females “cannot program, arrange, produce, edit or write electronic music”.
Is it just that mainstream media have a need to attribute successful albums to a single producer who happen to be male? Or is this misconception in fact prevalent? What do you think?
Sugarcubes - Birthday (Justin Robertson Remix)
Bjork - It’s In Our Hands (Soft Pink Truth Mix)
And in other news…. this is sooooo not cool.
HE’S THE REALEST

Tricky
Oooh it’s a glorious day when a new Tricky album is released! Hallelujah! Sounds like he’s keepin’ it gangsta with “Knowle West Boy” in this illuminating interview. And that living in Los Angeles for the past few years hasn’t affected his accent.

On The Radar

Be on the lookout for Diplo & Switch’s latest collaboration, Major Lazer. The Duo were responsible for M.I.A.’s latest offering, “Kala” and Santogold’s self titled long player.
Any one familiar with the Diplo & Santogold mixtape, “Top Rated” might of noticed that Wesley (Diplo) is on quite the Reggae tip lately, the album will follow that trend being a Reggae & Dance Hall album.
They have a myspace for the side project with a couple of snipets up. They recently debuted the album at the Notting Hill Carnival in the UK this last weekend.
Check out this interview Wesley did for Urb magazine where he sheds light on a lot of recent trends, and mentions that next up he’s producing an “indie rock” album for a group of “real young kids” recently signed to “XL”……
1+2+3 = the Bombay Bicycle Club??? (the hottest ish right now, besides the mgmt soulwax remix of course…)
